A cowhide, with long, black hair,
makes a very handsome laprobe. The
hides of cats, rats, squirrels, minks
and other small animals are nice for
trimmings, or for making caps, muffs
or capes.
Sheepskins make handsome rugs
tanned in this way, and dyed in dia
uiond dyes for wool. Prepare the dye
and put it in a large dishpan. When
it is the desired shade, rinse and dry.
The center may be cut out of one pelt |
and the border of another, where it is j
necessary to piece it, sew the seams j
I from the back, over and over loosely,:
so it will lie flat. The center may be
of olive green, with a border of gar-
net or crimson; or pink may be used
for the eenter, with a golden brown
border, in fact, they may be made of
any color to harmonize with the room
in which they are used. Line them
with some heavy material. They are
the warmest and easiest made rugs
imaginable.
Hugs may be mado of other kinds
of skins such as wolf, f« x and dog
skins, left their natural colors. In piec-
ing these skins be sure all the fur
lays the same way, and tlu s- ituis
will not be noticed.
Very pretty trimin?::. may lie made
by tanning young lam ' kins that are
still curly, and dyeing them brown or

of the Wilson Bill by the house last
Tuesday

Southern States to Africa. It will op-
erate a line of steamers between
America and Monrovia, Liberia. A
uniform fare of $20 per head will be
ch.irged, which is to pay for passage
and board en route. The society claims
to be prepared to furnish homes and
employment for the negroes in Libe-
ria. The promoters expect contribu-
tions from all over the south and from
Africa, and will also call 011 congress
for an appropriation. Negroes all over
the South, it is said, are already en-
gaging passage.
