FT SMITH WIN'S
MINERS HEADQl \RIFRS
McAlester lost out to Ft. Smith in
the contest for securing the head
quarters of the T'nited Mine Work er-
ror this district, the vote of the or-
ganization favoring Ft Smith bv 19
: votes over th<- combined -trength of
•hi city and Muskogee, for perman-
| • nt h adquarters. It is announced
that ultimately a headouarters build-
jing to cost about $105,000 will he
j' r<-cted in Ft. Smith, of which $40.-
000 will tje paid by the national or-
ganization. Owing to a depleted
treasury, occasioned by having to
' help out the miners in the trouble in
I West Virginia, the national treasury
is not prepared to put up this $40.'-
000 now. However, it is expected that
l work will start some time this year.

depth of about 2800 feet. The gas
will be used off and the well drilled
! deeper for oil. This is the fourth
j large gasser brought in around We-
