HIGH COST OF LIVING.
There has been many solutions to
the high cost of living, and none
strikes us like this one from a New
York business man who said:
"It seems that the only way to
cure extravagance is to take from
people the means for indulging in it.
This the profiteering landlord has
done. Shelter is a necessity. Man
may writhe at the price he has to pay
to keep a roof over his head, but keep
that roof he must. When most of his
income goes for that purpose he must
perforce cut down in every possible
way. He begins with luxuries, and
thence he proceeds to stringent econ-
omies in clothing and food. Merch-
ants dealing in commodities in which
reduction is possible find themselves
forced to offer their wares at reduced
figures in order to dispose of them
at all, and prices begin their slow
progress downward. This is just what
is happening today.
As for the greedy landlord, he will
reap the reward of his wickedness in
increased tax valuation on his proper-
ty, and presently in finding that
same property standing idle on his
hands, for the first money which the
harassed tenant can save will go to-
ward payment on a home of his own."
Just as long as some folks can de-
mand all the money you have got, so
long will extravagance go. Many peo-
ple who have demanded more money
for their services have at the same
time increased their extraVangance
and rendered less service on every in-
crease in wages. Money is too easy
to obtain and those who never save
a cent are the hardest people to satis-

The following is taken from the Hon-
ey Grove Signal, and is apropos of the
subject in hand: "The district court
of Johnson County has started a cru-
sade against the gossipers, and has
instructed the grand jury to make
thorough investigation and return in-
dictments against all men and worn-*
en who are afflicted with the "bab-
bling lip." According to this judge
the reputations of many good people
of that county have been blackened
by the wagging of tongues, and he
wants all the sharp-tongued slander-

wish this judge success in his cam-

Little Rock, May 22.—Building ma-
terial will not be cheaper for a long
time and the man who is putting off
building awaiting a decline in prices
of material is following a forlorn
hope, according to Henry W. Graup-
ner, who is doing considerable build-
ing in Little Rock this summer. Mr.
Graupner styles himself as a "home
builder" and aparently with very good
cause. He has built 21 homes in Lit-
tle Rock in the last eight months.
"The high cost of building is high
enough," says Mr. Graupner, "but it
is a fact that the increase in the cost
of building has not kept up with the
increase in the cost of living, the cost
of clothing, and the cost of almost
everything else. The average five
and six room house that cost $7,000
could at no time in the past ten years
be bought for less than $4,000. That
is an increase, to be sure, but it is not
an increase equal to the advance that
has been made in rents. The $4,000
house of five years ago rented for
about $25.
The $7,000 of today rents for $75 per
month. The cost of owning is not
quite twice as great, while the cost of
renting has increased three times.
The best time to build is right now.
It is cheaper to build now than it will
be for a long time, for there is no pos-
sobility of a reduction in the cost of
building material. All of the mills in
the country are from 18 months to
two years oversold and they have lit-
tle chance of catching up for a long
time."
