VOL. 1
PADEN, OKLAHOMA, FRIDAY, MARCH, 26, 1309.
NO. 26.
MASS MEETING
LAST SATURDAY.
Many Gather At The
Pnblic School
Building.
•Last Saturday niglit at the
Paden Public School building
a Mass Meeting of the citizens
was held.
Mayor L. W. Garrett was in
the chair. On a motion that
wss moved and seconded E. F.
Jones was elected secretary of
the meeting.
Dr. Havens tlien stated the
object of the meeting, which
was to get candidates to an-
nounce themse^'es on the ticket.
He declared that there was need
of a change, and that he had
talked to several of both parties
who were in favor of getting
out a Citizens ticket. He want-
ed officers who would enforce
the law, and thus reverse the
condition of things that had
been prevailing here. He said
lhat the town had become so
bad, that some good men had
threatened to leave it, if a
change does not take place.
He then requested the Secretary
to read Section 5-7 of Article
2, so that they all might be
acquainted with that part of
the Election law.
Section 5. Any elector may
become a candidate before any
political -party for nomina-
tion for any office herein speci-
fied in any primary election by
filing with the county election
board, not more than twenty
nor less than ten days before
the date of such primary, a
written notice, setting forth his
name as he desires it to appear
upon the ballots, his postoflice
address and in cities of the first
class shall give liis street num-
ber and ward He shall, in such
notice state the name of the
office for which he desires to
become a candidate and shall
give the date of the primary
and specify the political party
of which he desires to be a can-
didate.
Section 6. Independent can-
didates may have their names
printed upon the ballots as can-
didates for any office to be filled
at the election to be held in
cities, towns and villages, on
the first Tuesday in April; pro-
vided they file with the county
election board a written notice
as is required of candidates for
a political party nomination.
Section 7. Notices present-
ing the names of independent
candidates shall be filed with
the county election board dur-
ing the period provided herein
during which candidates are re-
quired to file notice of their can-
didacy in primary elections.
E. E Taylor said that he
realized the necessity of elect-
ing the right men to office. If
any one desires to be mayor or
any other office, let him at once
send his name in. Let us be
very careful who we elect to
office. I would like to see Pa-
den elect a mayor and other
officers who would be a credit
to the town.
W. L. Grain discussed the
law on the question. All we
can do is to try aud get good
men to go on the ticket.
Dr. Havens reminded the
audience again that the object
of the meeting was merely to
get some men into the idea of
becoming candidates. He had
himself that day filed his name
with the county election board
for mayor. He did not want
this office but was thinking then
that Tuesday was the last day
for tiling your name with that
bjard, and was afraid that no
one else would do it. He then
read part of the Election law.
J. M. Cash thought they
ought to select some good men,
and try and get them come out
for some office.
W. B. McClain was among
those who took part in the dis-
cussion.
Dr. Havens moved aud J. M.
seconded the following motion:
That a meeting be called for
next Wednesday night, which
was carried.
Dr. Havens then moved and
J. M. Woods seconded the
following motton: That the
chair appoint a committee of
three to solicit men to make ap
plication for the various offices,
which was carried.
Mayor L. W. Garrett then ap-
pointed the following commit-
tee: John Wright, C. C. Cox j
and Sid Munsey.
A motion to adjourn until
Wednesday night was then put
and carried.
The meetihg was regarded by
those Who are in a position to
judge, as very hopeful for Pa-
den. As a rule it is very diffi
cult to get many to attend a
meeting of this kind here. But
the attendance on Saturday
night, shows that Paden is
waking up to the great impor-
tance of electing the right men
to office.
brighter world. Age 76.
He had beeu sick only a short
time, though he had been in
feeble health for a good while.
His death was quite unexpected.
In early life he joined the
Free Will Baptist Church, and
was a member up to the time of
his death. He had lived here
for three or four years. He
leaves a wile to morn his sud-
den departure and many friends.
The funeral sevices and
burial took place on Monday
af'ernoon at Paden Cemetery.
Mr. Stinett conducted the
services, which consisted of
song, reading of Scripture,
prayer and a short address.
Quite a number of rigs followed
the silent procession to the
Cemetery.
We desire to express our sym-
pathy to the widow who is now
left alone in the vorld. "Not
lost but gone before."
