The state printing steal is the
one subject lhat is occupying the
time of the legislature. From re-
ports in the papers it may run
up to 820,000, The scandal is all
in the Democratic camp, but the
members of the legislature say
they are going to find out all
about it and let no guilty man es-

\ erden bad a fire last week
that destroyed about half the
business portion of the town. The
citizens claim that it was set by
the men who had been opposed
the enforcement of the prohibi-
tion law.
The agitation over the perman-
ent location of the state capital
still bobs up. It is very evident
that there is a desire to take it
Sway from Guthrie, but it will
have to be voted away and the
state at large may take a notion
to keep it at Guthrie.
Education on the liquor ques
i tion evidently goes on through
the elections are over and the
licenses about to be granted for
this year. "It has been asserted
here in Sutton that there is more
money spent for intoxicating
drinks than is spent for either
meat or bread. Is this a fact?"
demands a student of the issue.
< 'wing tothe revenue departments
sharp eye on the liquor business
it is possible to know about how
much intoxicating stuff the people
of this land consume. The drink
bill in 1906 amounted in round
numbers to 81,450,000,000, not to
mention the moonshine trade.
Just how much bread and meat
the people eat annually it is not
easy to tell. The liquor bill is,
however, more than double the
value of the wheat crop for a year
and so doubtless considerably
exceeds the value of the bread
*e eat, since much of the wheat
I is exported. As to the meat, the
1 total value of all the cattle, sheep
ind swine in the country at the
last census was less than two bil-
lions. Probably less than two-
thirds of the value represented
one year's production, of which
a large share is exported, hence
it is safe to say our meat bill does
not reach
the mijestis propor-

ifag resolutions in regard to the | would pay tha national debt "a
to risk Mr. Bryan's vengeance
in their future campaigns for
office. If they should defeat his
nomination this year and the
nominee they name should be
beaten in the presidential strug-
gle, Bryan would have a trem-
endous advantage over them
when they come up for re-elec-
tion.
Meanwhile Governor Johnson's
friends are growing more confid-
ent from week to 'week and his
manager has opened headquart-
ers in Washington, with the an-
nouncement that the Johnson
boom is gaining ground so fast
that it is necessary to maintain
open house to accommodate all
the men who are flocking to his
support. This bold step on the
pari of the Johnson Demoorats
means that from this time for-
ward the fight will get hotter and
hotter. It is a strange circum-
stances, and a potent evidence of
Bryan's lack of political judge-
ment, that instead of having the
nomination at his mercy as he
did a year ago Bryan is now
righting on the defensive, with a
fair prospect of losing in the end.
