May 8. with matinees Tuesday a: 1
Wednesday, the average person
apt to imagine that Griffith's m
pendous spectacle of Civil War and
reconstruction days is a series of t
detached scenes. The excitenn
runs high over the battle of Pete:
burg, the blood-stirring rides of i ■
Ku Klux Klansmen, the a*«a-sii
tion of Lincoln, the session of th"
South Carolina legislature and <h •
man's March to the Sea.
But "The Birth of a Nation.'
everybody who has seen It know-
tells a well-connected story of r.
mance a d chivalry which Is sidi
lost sight of an instant amid the
roar of battle or the clattering f.t
horses hoofs. At Petersburg, th>-
greatest thril comes when Col. Ben
Cameron of the Confederate Array
charges the command of his ol't co.
lege friend. Capt. Phil 8ton<-i«iau of
the Federals. These are the heroe
of the double love story that run-
through th° drama, each ail°rwar i
marrying the other's siHter. Th"
Stoneinans are conspicuous in Ford
Theatre. In tht audience, at the as-
sassination of Lincoln. One of the
youthful C'amerou* falls a victim to
the war in Sherman's march to the
sea. The South Carolina legislature
passes a law for the intermarrlae •
of blacks and whites making pos-
sible two tragic climaxes In the
story The rides of the Klansmen
are all the more exciting from tha
fact that their ultimate object is the
rescue of persons inwhom the audi-

Nowhere has Griffith lost sight of
his story and his spectacle is all th--"
more dramatic in consequence.
