H. Thomas, temporary president
of the Oklahoma Farmer*' Society of
Equity, upon a**umlng the presi-
dency, Issued the following statement
to the farmer* of the «tate.
"I desire herewith to make a brief
announcement In accepting the pre.i-
jdency of the Farmers' Society of
Equity for the *ute of Oklahoma.
Tble society but recently entered the
state and organized a few county
| unions, the representatives of which
met in Shawnee on the 21st in*t. and
effected a state organization, prepara-
I tory to an active organization cam-
i palgn throughout the entire state.
I 'While the equity system is but
j little known to the great body of the
people throughout large sections of
our country, yet it is not a new and
untried plan. It is not an experi-
mental theory. Theory has been
eliminated, and this system 1* now
offered to you as a practical plan-
practical because it Is In successful
operation now in sections of our own
country and Is giving most satisfac-
tory result*.
"The purpose of the Society of
Equity la to promote a plan of prac-
tical co-operation among farmers In
the marketing of all erops at profit-
able price*, and to *upply the con-
sumer more directly, more efficiently
and more cheaply than Is possible
under the system of distribution now
in vogue.
"The high cost of living with con-
stantly Increasing prices is the
greatest national problem, and Its
solution Is giving grave concern to
the leading minds of the nation. The
equity system, If applied In the mar-
keting and distribution of farm prod-
uct*, will solve this great problem,
benefiting alike the producer and the
consumer.
"The present prices of the staple
crops of the country do not give to
the producer return* for the labor
expended and the Investment made;
therefore, the best result In prod....
t'ou to.not obtained. And the present
system of distribution Is very waste-
ful, loo expensive and wholly Inade-
quate to give the best result* to the
consumers, both as to service and
price. The equity system will cor
rect these unhappy conditions and
will bring prosperity and content-
ment to the great body of our people
"Ab abovff stated, a state organi-
zation of the Farmers' Society of
Equity has been effected. A state or-
ganizer la now in the field, assisted
by several district organizers, and
the equity system of marketing and
distribution will be presented to the
farmers in each county of the state
as rapidly as capable county organl
zors can be secured, until the entire
state Is covered. And In the mean
time, we will respectfully ask that
the farmers especially and the repre-
sentatives of every legitimate and
material Interest of tho state with-
hold Judgment until this system is
fairly presented to them for adoption
or rejection.
"loiter, I will give to the public a
more oxpllclt announcement of the
I'lan of the equity system than U
lere briefly outlined. And in the
meantime, if anyone desires literature
or othor Information relative to tha
equity system, write J. A. Harinan,
state secretary, Shawnee, Okla.
"Respectfully,
"P. H. THOMAS.
