c, «"b Baking Powder
Its supzuiotity is tmquestioned
Its fame wotW-wide
Its ttse a protection and a guarantee
against alum food
The low-grade powders are made from " phosphate alum," or " sodium alumi-
num sulphate," which is also alum, a mineral acid, and that makes the food unhealthful.
One pound of the imitation (25c.) powders contains five ounces of alum, a
mineral poison.
Food baked with alum baking powders is foand to contain a portion of the
alum unchanged.
The continued use of alum made food impairs digestion, causing; dyspepsia.
The careful housewife when buying baking powder, will examine the label and take
only a brand whose label shows the powder to be made from cream ot tartar.

NIENTS FOR
VOTE SELLING
—o -
DISFRANCHISEMENT OF OHIO
BRIBE-TAKERS BRINGS OUT
WOMEN CANDIDATES.
West Union, Ohio, Jan. 9. — Foot-
sore, ragged, half starved and weary,
three middle aged men, one a cripple,
appeared in Common Pleas court to
acknowledge their guilt of vote sel-
ling. They had walked by the light of
lanterns from Rockville, twenty-five
miles distant, to tell Judge Blair that
they had sold their votes last Novem-
ber in order to get money to provide
food for their families.
The story of the three—John Rich-
ter, Page Cook and Ashbury Cooper—
excited the pity of the court, who
gave them a month to pay $5 fines
imposed and disfranchisement for five
years.
The grand jury, after reporting for-
ty-five indictments, recessed until
Wednesday to enable the members to
attend to private business affairs,
neglected for several weeks.
Judge Blair believes certain party
workers are withholding some names
from the grand jury. A leader in
Monroe township, who on two previ-
ous visits could give but a few names,
reappeared with a list of twenty-five
new names. All of these men, he
said, had been bought by him at a
price ranging from $5 to $15.
Every male elector in Bill township
has been disfranchised and only wo-
men are qualified to vote at the next
election for school trustees and none
but women will be eligible to hold the
office of trustee.
For the first time in the history of
women suffrage not a man will step
to the ballot box to compete with
women voters.
Three women have already an-
nounced themselves as candidates for
trusteeship.
Saturday night a general raid of all
known houses of prostitution in the
city was made, which resulted in a
large number of arrests.
A. C. Canalis, colored, was arrested
Saturday night for being drunk and
beating his wife. He tried the "bad
man" act, and officers had to break
the door of his house down to get
him, as he refused to unlock, and
wouldn't let his wife unlock the door.
The following are among other ar-
rests made Saturday night: Emma
Harvey and Minnie Phillips, vagran-
cy an<j confidence; Rose Dowdy and
Ella Starch; Ethel Shopshire, main-
taining house of prostitution; Ruth
Piper and Ruth Hughes, lewdly abid-
ing; Jingo Bourtonnais, drunk; A.
Longhorn, drunk; Oscar Wood, drunk
and fighting.
YOAKUM WILL EXTEND FRISCO.
To Become Trans-Continental Sys-
tem—Western Terminus at Loh
Angeles.
Los Angeles, Cal., Jan. 9.—The St.
Louis and San Francisco railroad is
to be expanded into a trans-continen-
tal system with its Pacific coast ter-
minus at Los Angeles, according to
B. F. Yoakum, chairman of the board
of directors and head of the company.
"The Frisco intends extending its
line from Quanah, Texas, to the Paci-
fic coast," said Mr. Yoakum. One of
the two surveys made a number of
years ago will be followed and the
distance from Quanah to Los Angeles
will be less than 1000 miles.
One of the surveyed routes is by
way of Albuquerque and the other by
way of Phoenix. The Albuquerque
route would mean construction almost
due west, practically paralleling the
Santa Fe. The Phoenix rote would be
more dierct and would traverse for
some distance country comparatively
undeveloped by railroads.

IN POLICE COURT.
he usual Monday assortment of
petty violators were gathered in court
this morning, ranging from common
vagrancy to "con grafters."
There were only four charges o£
drunkenness, but most of the other
charges grew out of too close an as-
sociation with the gentleman of color.
As a result of the r&id on all know l
houses of prostitution Saturday night
the city treasury is richer this morn-
ing because of th9 forfeiture of bail
by those who were caught in the
drag.
The following were arrested Satur-
day night: Emma Harvey and Minnie
Phillips, vagrancy and confidence;
bail forfeited. Ruth Piper and Ruth
Starch, vagrancy; held over. Ethel
Shopshire, maintaining bawdy house;
bail forfeited. Rose Dowdy and Ella
Hughes, lewdly abiding. The above-
named with two exceptions who are
held over, are known to have left the
city.
Prank Moore, who had been arrest
d on a warrant sworn out by Goldle
Foster, was arraigned and plead not
guilty to the charge of having choked
her or absconding with her pocket-
book, as alleged in the warrant. Af-
ter the court had listened patiently
to the arra> of witnesses for the city
and defendant, Frank said that "the
whole thing was a joke," and from
the testimony offered, the court was
apparently of the same opinion, and
Frank was dismissed.
Canalis, colored, wife-beater
and drunk, plead guilty, but—Judge
Flowers would have no buts admit-
ted and read the hulking culprit a
lessdn op the martial obligations. The
judge said thac no "buts" would ex-
cuse a man for hitting a woman, and
tha' nil wife beaters who appeared
before him would get the limit.
Canalis endeavored to act the role
of a real "bad man" Saturday night.
After beating his wife he barricaded
himself in the house, and would not
allow the woman to open the door
when the officers came to arrest him.
They were equal to tho emergency,
and broke the door down, and tho
cringing negro was easily secured
During the trial, his little three-
year-old son evaded its mother, who
was absorbed in what the judge was
saying to her husband, and was pois-
oned. Sergeant Hanaphy was the first
to detect the symptoms of poison, and
immediately telephoned for a doctor.
It developed later that the baby had
found a piece of nitrate of silver, and
mistook it for sweets. He did not
swallow it, so there was no danger.
Most of those present mistook the
squalls as an evidence of grief over
its father's predicament.
Maybe some one is after the de-
partment's cat.
