wife and two children were hilled.
Their house was demolished1 while the
family slept, little dreaming of their

four of Alvas citizens.
There was no escaping from the
furry of the storm coming as it did
when the citzens were In bed asleep
Six other houses were destroyed and
a score of the Inmates more or less

TRAI
Heck Island passenger trains are
now running with a considerable de-
gree of regularity, although there is
some time lost on account of the nec-
essity for run nine slowly o-er «h«
portions of track that have recently
been repaired. The last place east oi
Shawnee was made safe this morning
and all trains are now running
through without transfer. The bag-
gage that has been accumulating at
Holdenville was brought in by 47 this
morning. It t expected that som<j
freight will be handled out of Shaw-
nee this evening. The Asher train Is
still annuled, and no announcement
has yet been made as to when it
will be put on again.
One of the great difficulties now ex-
perienced by the local 'Rock Island
agents is the getting of anything like
accurate information as to trains on
connecting lines, especially for Texas
points. The extent of the damage on
other lines has not yet been learned

California Trying to Check the Evil
—Confined to Women of Fashion
San Francisco, Cul.. May 27—(Unit-
ed Press)—Secretary Wfoildeu of ta<>
state pharmacy tywml haa teamd a
statement In which he declares that
the habit of opium smoking: is srow-
lnx at an alarming rate among the
"smart set,' and that vice is spread-
ing at rapid state in San Francisco.
Whilden is raging war on vi°o and his
investigations show that the greatest
number of patroiiH of opium are wo-
men who drive to the drug store in
their own nutoiuoblles for the drug
which they return with to their homes
and there practice the habit that
breeds crime of every conceivable na-
ture.
While these facts are In existence
and are known to the authorities the
question is what can be done to check
it. and in doing so turn the tide of
crime. This is one of the Host vex-
ing questions with which the authori-
Uch have to work out In a satisfactory
way e'er long, or the state will be
overrun with criminals.
