THAT INVESTIGATION.
i'he senate committee that was hern
some few weeks ago making an In-
vestigation Into the Kickapoo Indian
land frauds have made their report to
the senate. The News does not claim
to be In a position to speak Intelli-
gently upon the contents of the report,
but it cortainly reveals a good many
things that ought never to have been
rinnv or indulged in by those charged
with them.
In making this investigation hut one
side of the story was told, ami when
those whom it charges of having com-
mitted the frauds are heard, a differ-
ent complexion may be placed upon It.
It ls hoped that Bur.h may be the case,
aot alone for the accused but Okla-
homa. The new state has been
placed In the limelight, as well as
many of its most prominent and in-
fluential citizens in a way that is un-
desirable for future well being of all.
The source from which much, if not
all. of this evidence waB secured can
not be taken as conclusive proof of
•jullt. There are two sides to ill.
questions to which this la no excep-
tion, and after the facts have been
brought out In defence, the presume
tion of guilt may have vanished or j
been transferred from the purchasers j
1 o the Indians that did the Belling.
That all Indians are not noted for
their George Washington heritage, no
one familiar with tliem will deny, and
it is barely posslb'.e that some pale-
face has gl"<sn them a cause whereby
both will "ecelve benefits at the ex
pense of *he honest purchasers. If tho
sale of lp*jd can be set aBlde and the
title tu-nod back to the Kickapoos,
who can resell them, thus realizing a
second time upon the property.
Tho red man may not be fully versed
in all of his white brothers tricks,
and yet many of us know from experi-
ence that ho can oft times give a pale-
faevd brother several points In the
gbme of deception and then come out
abend. These Klrkapoos are a long
ways from being Ignorant, but In fact
are as cunrlng as a fox. They know
at the time of making these deeds that
by a clever ruse, and which they have
no doubt played, they could have them
set a-.lde by claiming that undue Infiu.
ence had been brought to boar to In-
duce them to sign the doeds.
