The islands of St. Pierre and Grande
and Little Miqualon, whidh it Is rum
ored in dispatches from Tokio will
shortly be purchased by Japan, aro
located off the south coast of New
foundland and form a colony belonging
to the French government. It Is known
here that France has for some time
considered the sale of the Islands, and
this knowledge has been shared Ly t
French settlers, more than 1,500
whom have left thelslands for Can.T
within the last three months. While
the islands are rocky and produce litt'e
vegetation, thay are capable of being
strongly fortified and would make
gtx>d naval baae in time of war. Thi
present population of 8t. Pierre is
about 3,000, while tho other islands of
the group have about 1.500 inabitanta.
The former has three ocean cables
connecting it with the mainland.
