Former Shawnee Resident Writes
Her New Home.
San Dieguito, S. L. P., Mixlco, Sept.
25, 1946.
Dr. L. C. Warner. Shawnee, Okla.
Dear Friend:—We have now been in
Mexico nearly two months, would have
written sooner, but have waited to
know more about the country and peo-
ple. We like it here fine, and have
been very busy getting our land
cleared and house built. We have put
out ;1C orange trees and have planted
tomatoes between the rows. We in-
tend to plant oranges, lemons, pine-
apples. plums and a good many grapes
Mr. Grant has a friend at Tampeco.
W. W. Hopps, (hardware merchant,)
who owns a ranch 4 miles out from
Tampeco. He has out 2800 orange
trees a,nd this coming December or
Iry will put ,'out one thomland
more. He says his 3 year old trees
have from 10 to 200 oranges on each
of them. A Philadelphia friend, com
miasloner agent, recently paid to him
"Why do not you Americans go into
ornnge culture?" "Why man alive,"
said he. you have got the world, and
don't know it, you can have an early
variety ready for shipment from 4 to
0 weeks earlier than California or Fior
ida, and a later variety to ship from
14 to 6 weeks ofter California and
oranges are gone. We sent
Orleans for garden seeds and
intend to raise several acres of tonva*
toes cabbage and onions for winter
market.
The Americans here are nearly all
going to put out a few acres of oranges
this winter. Those that have been
here the longest seem the best satis-
fied.
Doctor, I met Mr, Ellis yesterday and
heard a good report from your Las-
Palmas tract. Mr. Ellis lives here in
San Dieguito, he is a surveyor and has
been down to Las-Palmas doing some
surveying for your people. He says
you have a fine piece of land there and
everyone there seems so enthusiastic
and satisfied. You know Doctor we
talked of the threats (named in North-
ern papers) of the Mexicans driving
the Americans out of Mexico, Ihe 10th
of September. , There was nothing in
it at all, and it must of been started
by the Santa Fe railroad and the West-
ern Irrigation Lands companies, to get
the people to go and settle and buy
there lands out in there drouthy and
irrigated country in Western Texas
and New Mexico, I which is like the
COO miles north of us in Cld Mexico)
where they get hardly any rain and
have to Irrigate at an expense of $5.00
an acre every year to raise a crop,
and where the wells are from 100 to
250 feet deep that costs them from
$300.00 to $500,000 to dig and put up
a wind mill. That is to expensive a
country for poor people to go to and
we are glad we come here and did
not get bit by these railroad companies
and irrigating land monopolies.
Some here was worried over these
stories in Northern newspapers, so we
had a meeting of the colony at the
school house Sunday so Judge Tousley,
our president of the colony, wrote the
governor at San Louis Potose who sent
us the commander In chief who told
us how well the governor l'ked to have
Americans come here, and they would
always be protected, etc., etc., every*
thing was quiet. We would be glad
to hear from you.
Yours truly,
MRS. S. E. GRANT.
