One hundred new locomotives will
be put to work within the next four
months. This addition to Its power
equipment represents an outlay it
nearly $2,000,000.
That seems to be a big sum of mon-
ey for one railroad to spend at one
time for one item. And It is a large
Bum, any way you look at It. A resi-
dence property In the average west-
ern community, costing $25,000, .'s
town talk for many weeks while build-
ing. It Impresses one as costing a
lot of money. Yet when the Santa Fe
pays from $23,000 for one of Its best
passenger engines down to $1",000 for
a switch engine, no one comments on
the fact—oven the buying of one hun-
dred such engines only means brief
comment in the news columns.
The new locomotives comprise the
following classes—some of which were
made famous by the record breaking
run of the Scotty Special last July:
Twentyfour Atlantic type balanced
compound. Three times that number
of this type are already running be
tween Chicago and La Junta, pulling
the Santa Fe's heaviest and most
speedy passenger trains. As compared
with the Pacific type, the Atlantic has
four drive wheels instead of six, and
of greater diameter.
Fifteen Pacific type balanced com-
pound. There are now thirty of this
class In heavy passenger service on
the Coast Lines.
Twelve Santa Fe type tandem com-
pound. These are intended for very
heavy freight traffic In the mountains
of New Mexico and Arizona. Six ar"
coal burning and six oil burning.
Forty-nine six wheel connected
switching. Ten of these are being con
structed at the Topeka shops and the
others at the Baldwin works.
It Is claimed that the maximum
speed of the Atlantic typo has never
hesitate to "let 'em out" to full capac
been reached, because the engineers
Ity. The large number ordered of this
class of engines would seem to lndi
cate that the Santa Fe contemplates
sending its regular trains over its
prairie lines almost as fast as the
Scott Special traveled. The track is
in fine shape there, and high speed
can he safely maintained on it.
The rapid growth of the southwest
and the unprecedented crop yields of
recent years have so taxed transporta-
tion facilities that the Santa Fe has
determined to be ready for any reason
able future demand in that region.
TWO ARE INJURED
While stealing a ride Monday even-
ing about 6 o'clock a young lad named
Ed Hodges, In jumping off a Santa Fe
train at Main street, fell to the ground
and was drawn under the cars, the
wheels crushing one of his feet so
badly that Drs. Hamilton and Ander-
son were compelled to amputate part
of the member. Aa number of boys
have been stealing short rides in the
yards, and this will probably be a
lesson to them.
A little later in the evening a switch
engine in the upper yards struck a
man named McCarty, a member of an
extra gang on the Santa Fe, who was
lying along the track with his head
and arm on the rail. The footboard
brushed his head aside, but the wheels
struck his arm( crushing It so badly
that Dr. Grayson had him removed
to the Shawnee hospital, where the
arm was amputated. McCarty had evi-
dently been drinking. He had about
$G0 on his person when found.
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy the Best
and Most Popular.
"Mothers buy It ior croupy children,
railroad men buy it for severe coughs
and elderly people buy it for la grippe"
say Moore Bros., Eldon, Iowa. " We
sell moro of Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy than any other kind. It seems
to have taken the lead over several
other good brands." There is no ques
tlon but this medicine is the best that
can bo procured for coughs and colds,
whether It be a child or an adult that
is afflicted. Sold by the Owl Drug
Store.
NO ONE IS KILLED
Sheriff Grace received word Mon-
day night that another shooting scrape
had occurred at the notorious Corners
saloon site in the southeast corner of
this county on the territory border, but
to the best of his understanding the
message stated that no one was hurt
or killed. It appears that Sam Parks,
who killed John Coleman there some
time ago, shot at a man named Martin,
but missed him. The sheriff has
gone down today to investigate.
