There Are Fifty-Five I'atients, but

Ary Alarm.
New Orleans, Aug. 10.—An analypls
of the report for Thursday sho.va that
thirty-two of the seventy-four new
cases of yellow fever appeared In the
heart of the originally Infected.quarter
The explanation given by Inspectors is
that after their own houses are disin-
fected and the mosquitoes killed that
some Italians go around and pay visits
to sick friends, become! nfecterl and
carry the fever home with them.
The situation shows Canal street con-
tinues to Improve. ~n that section obe-
dience to government regulations
more general and the results are plain.
While the repo. t Friday morning show
ed five new cases, only th. .e new
squares are infected.
The unexpected decline In the death
rarte Is giving such a feeling of satisfac-
tion here that people are beginning to
believe the possibilities of the visitation
have been overdrawn. Doctors, how
ever, say the lov. death rate Is due to
the fact that practically the whole com
munlt.v has been educated up to the ne-
cessity of calling a doctor the moment
high temperature develops, In'conse-
quence of which most cases are taken
hold of In their Inclplency and are soon
on the road to convalescence. One
the results of the campaign is likely to
hp an insistent demand hereafter that
all doctors and all citizens shall pledge
themselves to make known the appe;
ance of the first suspicious case.
So successful have the authorities
been in removing foci In the upper sec
tlon of the city that the belief is g nera'.
that If the first cases here bad been
promptly reported they could have been
handled, the Infe- tion stamped out anr
New Orleans spared a quarantine o
long duration.
Hon Ami and Arodyne plantations. In
Te'rrebonne parish, are practically fr«
of fever now, but a close watch Is to be
kept for secondary infection.
At Patterson, while the total cases
reached fifty-five, the death rate has
been so Insignificant that the early
alarm has passed. Alexandria has still
only one case, but desires an expert to
be sent thither In order that the entire
town may be examined for suspicious
fever.
There is considerable Interest here
over the proposed bouse to house
spectton at Ciulfport. because Gulfport
has been doing a large maritime trade
There has always been some apprehen
slon here that the fever might slip int.
that city.
The board of health at I.aUe ChnrleF
finds Itself helpless to make headway
against the state of public opinion In
the town. The health authorities deslr
to put on a sane quarantine, but munle
Ipal officials and citizens generally hav
ranged themselevs on the other side
