FRIDAY,FEBEUAKY 18. is 8.
Kd. P. Inolk. Editor and Proprietor.
Clyde Mattox denies that lie was
drunk at Newton. Kansas, or that lie
lias been iu Newton at all for severa
years. He aays he is employed in
Kansas City and tr\ing to live an
honest, sober life.
The democrats of Kentucky con-
template a fearful revenge on John
G. Carlisle. A bill has been intro-
duced in the legislature to change
the name of Carlisle county to
'•William Jennings Bryan'' county
There is at least one democratic
paper in Oklahoma that this republi-
can administration is treating with
marked and remarkable considera-
tion. Last Sunday's Guthrie Leader
contained twenty-five land notices.
And Cousin McKinley is reciever of
the Guthrie land office !
It is now generally believed that
Major Woolscy, former Indian agent
at Ponca agency, is not guilty of
complicity in the attempt to rob the
agency. Indeed, it is susceptible of
proof that he was the person who
gave warning to the authorities,
whereby the robbery was frustrated.
Matt, Lawrence, the ringleader, has
confessed that he desired to implicate
Woolscy through revenge.
The appointment of Hon. John
II. Burford as chief justice is receiv-
ed with general satisfaction. He
made a splendid record as associate
justice, which is presumptive proof
that he will do the same as chief
justice. Mr. Haiuer is yet to be
tried. The principal positiou he has
held has been city attorney of Guth-
rie, where he made a good record.
The Transcript believes he will
worthily till the position of associate
justice. It heartily congratulates the
two gentlemen upon their prefer-'
ment.
Sen ok oe Lome, Spanish minister
at Washington, has resigned and left
the country. A letter he had writ-
ten to a friend in Havana was stolen
and published. It spoke of Presi-
dent McKinley as "catering to the
rabble," and as "a low politician."
DeLotne could not deny his author-
ship, and the only thing left for him
was to pack his trunks and get out.
There was some excitement over the
insult offered the United States by
this greaser, but it has quieted down
and the incident is probably closed.
It is probable De Lome will be hailed
as a hero when lie reaches Spain, and
it is not improbable that he will be
made prime minister.
THE SAME OLD STORY.
The Wellington Mail contains a
very sad notice to all the old timers
along the border. It is that Kd
Hewins, of Oklahoma, was now men-
tally, physically and financially ruin-
ed and had been sent to a Keeley in-
stitute in the east. For many years
the popular Kd llewins, of Cedar-
vale, was the largest farmer and
6tock grower iu Chatauqua county,
and had the finest farm, buildings
and quipments, a game preserve
stocked with elk aud deer, and all
that uian could want in property.
Although a democrat and his county
^republican he was invincible, and
was twice elected to the state senate.
Later, with Eli Titus, now live stock
agent for the Santa Fe, they became
the wealthiest cattle shippers in that
part of Kansas, aud their paper was
;ood for hundreds of thousands of
dollars. But with great prosperity
came habits of conviviality, drink-
ing of intoxicants, and looseness of
business methods, and when the
srnsb came they were almost bank
rupt. Since then llewins has made
x gallant struggle, but be had added
the morphine habit, and now the
Mail pronounces him a wreck. It is
'ie hope of his many .old friends
it the cure may pro\ a success,
aid that he may be restored,-aad yet
jecome a power for good. But the
esson of temperance should not l>e
ost on the present generation.
RAILROAD BUILDING IN 1B9S.
Railroad building will lie much
larger this year than for the last de-
cade. But this activity is to take
place almost entirely in the south.
It is estimated that there are con-
tracts out now for the construction
of al least 3.000 miles south of Ma-
son and Dixon's line. Of course,
Oklahoma is included in this section
of activity. This railroad building,
too, is not restricted to one locality,
but includes all the southern states.
An important Influence in southern
railroad building is the diversion of
agricultural products for export from
the north to the south Atlantic sea-
ports. The llliaois Central, the
Louisville & Nashville, the Chesa-
peake &Ohio and other railways now
have their own lines connecting Chi-
cago with the sea, and are making
connections in Texas, Mississippi,
Alabama, Louisiana and other states.
A branch of the Mobile & Ohio, lOti
miles long, now under construction,
will complete a trunk line from St.
Louis to Savannah and make another
channel to convey the export prod-
ucts of the western states and terri-
tories to tidewater. The consolida-
tion of railroads, which has been go-
ing on in the south during the last
four years, has shut off competition
in many sections and has made the
construction of competing lines nec-
essary.
Railroad building in the east and
north is at a standstill, having in
many cases been overdone, but the
south, and especially the Indian ter-
ritory and Oklahoma, is behind in
its supply of transportation facilities.
It is to supply this growing necessity
that capital is seeking profitable in-
vestment in the south.
Koyal Bikil th. food par*,

Why not annex Cuba and stop all
this worry and trouble? That's
what Spain would dj, aud what Spain
is expecting the United States to do.
She should not be disappointed.

Ed Anthony, one of liurllngame's
promising young business men, will
eintnirk in the mercantile trade for him-
self, locating at Norman, Oklahoma, a
thriving town of 2,500 inhabitants,
about twenty-five miles from Oklahoma
City. Kd has been down there about
two weeks and says that lie has found a
good location. The town has the Uni-
versity and other territorial institutions.
Trade comes to the town from long
distances. Kd has the means, the abil-
ity to carry on a good business. He is
a young man whom we can heartily
recommend to the people of his new
location, and there is no douht of his
