Ehitor Talihina Nkws:—
I promised you this morning
that I would write a piece for
your paper this weok, and you
asked me what my subject would
be. I told 3'ou I had not thought
of any particular one; but, at that
moment it popped into my mind.
"When do children learn lying.'*
So I began scraping my membra
box for something on this subject.
I rememberread'iigsoine where,
something like this: A Chicago
teacher said that mothers came to
her so often, asking how they can
break their children from telling
untruths, that she had almost
come to think, that lying was a
national evil. Humiliatingn>s this
conclusion is, its truth cuunot be
gainsaid.
"1 ain so distressed," said a
mother to her boy's teacher, "that
Freddie could deceive you so. I
can't imagine why he is so un-
truthful; his father, is truth itself,
and I am sure no one ever hoard
me tell a lie. Call him in," she
added turning to her little daugh-
ter.
"He won't come if lie knows
Miss is here," said the child.
"Say it's grandma wants hiin,'' sug-
gested her mother, "that will fetch
him.'* And yet she wonder?'1 at
her boy's untruthfulness.
"Have you a dog!" asked a tax
collector at another home. "Not
a dog of any description," was the
prompt reply. "Whatabout speck
mammal" asked the little son, ap-
pearing in the doorway with a ti-
ny dog in his arms. "Lost me
two dollars,'' laughed his father,
relating tile incident, "capital joke
on your mother though." But I
should think rather a costly joke,
involving the loss of a boy's re-
spect for bis mother's veracity,
and by reflex influence lowering
his own stundard of truth.
"You are a half an hour lute
Willie," said another mother, "but
here's an excuse, give it to the
teacher, and she won't say a word."
The child, who couldn't read writ-
ing, confidently delivered the note.
It was an urgent request to have
him punished. A mean revtnge
for some trouble be bad given
her while being bathed and
dressed.
1 get this from Douahoe's Mag-
azine. If mean little lies and pet-
ty deceptions on the mother's
part are the child's early object
lessons, what wonder that he soon
outstrips his teacher, and even
shocks her by his propiciency in
the art.
No-v Mr. Editor, if my head
does not hurt too bad from the
free use of the broom stick for
this, I may write you on the other
side of this subject, some day. I
remain yoms truly,
A Tkachek.
