Sunday morning. Brooks himself
received serious but uot fatal burns.

Brooks is one of the thirty men
who were indicted in Muskogee
county on a charge of inciting the
Porum riot last May, and was ac-
quitted of the charge.
About a week ago another house
on the Whisenhnnt place, between
Porum and Texanna, was burned.
itrooks is a substantial farmer and
rather prominent in his section. This
latest outrage has excited the com-
munity as nothing else has done
since the tragic event of last May
when three men were killed at the
light at the Pony Starr home iti this
town. There have been a number
of houses and barns burned at vari-
ous times, but no loss of life until
the lire at the Brooks place.
So far as is known, there is no
clue as to the persons who set the
Brooks house on tire, but the evi-
dence that it was a deliberate at-
tempt to destroy the house is said
to be unquestioned. It is doubtful
if the perpetrators expected fatal re-
sults and the more serious turn to
the affair was due to th • rapidity
with which the house burned and
as the inmates were asleep they
were not awakened until it was too
late for them to escape

the first session of the Arizona leg-
islature got dow n to real business |
yesterday. The senate passed the
recall amendment to the constitu-
tion, the resolution granting women
equal suffrage and the Income tax
amendment to the federal constitu-
tion, all on first reading, without a
dissenting vote.
The recall amendment was offered
in both houses at 1:30 p. in., by pre- !
arrangement, and was gi\i.n imme-
diate consideration.
The recall measure probably will I
be placed on final passage Monday.
A resolution was introduced by
Senator .1. T. Hughes requesting con-
gress to submit a constitutional
amendment providing for the direct
election of Cnlted States senators by
the people.

Morris, the Sapulpa white hope, who
was defeated by .lim Stewart here
last week, left for the west Saturday.
Whether Carl will ever light again
is a question. Billy Newman, his
