Chandler, Okla., Sept. 7.—The Ok-
lahoma National Guard to the num-
ber of nearly 700 officers and men
are encamped here.
The camp, which has! been desig-
nated as "Camp Lee Cruce," In honor
of the commander-in-chief, is located
upon a several-acre tract of sodded
Bermuda with natural drainage, with
in a 15-mlnute march of the State
rifle range. The force consist of 12
companies of infantry, signal corps
hospital corps, engineer corps and
band. Lieut. Col. Jayne is In com-
mand, Col. Hoffman having been
granted a leave of absence. The
majors are Chas. Barrett, Mont I1
Highley and James E. Grlmsley
Capt. Fred Hunter of Company M, of
Oklahoma City, is regimental adju
tant. The sanitation is under charge
of Surgeon Maj. Scott. Maj. Scott
also has charge of the officers' mess
The officers and men got right
Tonight there will be a grand ball
given by the citizens of Chandler for
the officers, and later on there will
be one for the enlisted men.
The troops will remain here for
probably nine days, and one day will
be set apart as "field day" pt which
time the men of the different com-
mands will contest for prizes in
athletics. So far the health of the
men has been excellent and there
have been no accidents. Adj. Gen.
Frank Canton has his headquarters
with the regiment and is a close ob-
server of all movements.
Wewoka, Okla., Sept. 7.—Mystery
shrouds the murder of a Mrs. Bird-
head, an Indian woman 65 years old,
who was found lying unconscious un-
der her bed and died of her injuries
later. Her head had been beaten to
pulp. The woman lived four miles
west of Sasakwa, and left her home
to borrow some peaches from a
neighbor. None of the family was
at home when she arrived and it is
supposed the murderer was lurking
about the place.

CONVICTED THREE TIMES.
Wewoka, Okla., Sept. 7.—For the
third time Dan Scribner has been
convicted of murder by a jury and
this time his sentence Is to life im-
prisonment in the penitentiary. He
was charged with murder In Ponto-
toc County more than two years ago,
convicted and sentenced to hang. He
was successful in obtaining a new
trial and his sentence was to lite
imprisonment.
