Coal Mine Discovered.
Durant, I, T., Sept. 26.—For several
years there have been whispers around
In real estate circles stories to the
effect that there were huge deposits
of coal, asphalt, lignite, sulphur and
nearly everything else in that line
that is produced under the earth, and
that these deposits were in the east
of Durant.
One man over in the northeastern
part of the city was reported to have
dug a well on his lot and to have pas-
sed through a three foot vein of the
finest coal. The town of Durant went
wild for a few days, but these lots all
belonged to the Indians then. No man
had a title to his land, and for fear
the town might be placed among the
seggregated lands, the matter was
hushed up and no attention has ever
been paid to the matter further.
If there was anything in the report
the men who knew have kept it to
themselves and are waiting for a suit-
able opportunity to give their secret
to the world.
