UNLESS YOU'RE A H--L OF A one?
The manner in which Haskell treated Jesse Dunn
the nominee of the democratic primaries for superior
judge, on convention day in Oklahoma City, is a
I.iir sample of what both democrats and republicans
may expect with a man like Boss Haskell in the posi-
tion of governor, provided he ever reaches the guber-
natorial chair.
Haskell s treatment of Mr. Dunn marks him as a
tufiian and a heartless dictator as well as a man with
no appreciation within him for past great services
rendered.
Jesse Dunn, as state chairman, led the democratic
iorces in the sweeping victory which made it possi-
bl 1 lor Air. Haskell to become the dictator that he
is today.
-Mr. 1)11110, its an interested party, being a candi-
date with Mr. Haskell, went to him with a'list of
five persons who had been selected by candidates as
persons whom they thought should be remembered
among the members ot«the campaign committees.
^ hat did -Mr. Haskell do? Keeeive Mr. Dunn as
though he were at least worthy of civil treatment by
the exalted one? No! He could not have exhibit-
ed more fully his contempt. •
•Mr. Haskell is reported to have read the list of
names and tossed it over on the table, saying to Mr
Dunn, '1 am going to run tilings to suit myself."
In answer to Mr. Dunn's explanation. "We merely
offer the names as a su
the Bos-. sn>d "1 doT't lik.you anyway, Dunn; you
worked agaii si me in the primaries and said I had not
dd state.orgnnizaton, and you and
your crowd can no to hell.* •
That Mr Dunn w;;, surprised is not necessary to
relate. In fact, it is said that he replied witli, "I;
came ti. you in all f-iirness. wearing your button andL"arh«vSl!S*'is1,V'n* n'ar 'h
ready to work for you. and I tell you, sir, it takes a '
brave man to wear your button over in my country.'
And with that he took- the button off ami left the
room. «
What must be the make-up of a man holding the
re^nl n e position on the ticket that Boss Haskell does
to Mr. Dunn, who would*ise such unfair, 'dictator-
ial methods, say nothing of the action from the stand-
point of pergonal insult? * •
In some states such actions woukbin the outset re-
tire the perpetrator, lygh up as he has readied to
political oblivion, but in Oklahoma the Boss appears
to think it tlip proper thing.
Moman Pruitt bended the sycophantic kuee; (Tuce
did almost as much, and it appears to be the Boss'
idea that all must "pass under the rod."
■Voah Webster, in his essay, "The Tigies," %ays:
"When the will of man is raised above law and
i.ceeney it is always tyranny and despotism, whether
" ls 'he w'!' - ha ■ jv, or n bastard patriot.''
