man submarines of the African liner
Kalaba and the Itrlttsh steamer Aftuila
bound from Liverpool for Lisbon.
The Kalaba which was torpedoed in
Sst: Heorse's channel Sunday after-
noon carried a crew of iO and about
160 passengers and of this total only
HO were rescued. Of those rescued
eight died later from exposure.
Tho Amiila had a crew of 42 and
three passengers and of these 23 of
the crew and all the passengers were
lost.
In hoth cases on sighting the sub-
marine the captain tried to escape by
putting on all speed possible but the
underwater craft overtook the steam-
ers showing that Hermany now has
some of her most modern submarines
engaged In the blockade operations
against 1 n k land.

that she foundered. On their ar-
rival at Fishguard several of the
erewr wore bandages having been
wounded by the fire from the sub-
marine. Dutch .Steamer Hits Mine.
Another Dutch steamer the Amstel
of 4 95 tons has been blown up by a
mine off Flamborough head but her
crew were rescued
Outside of the sinking of these
steamers the only event of Import-
ance news of which was received dur-
ing the day were the renewal of nrtjv-
ity by the llusslan Hlack sea fleet
which bombarded the forts on the
Bosphorns and the announcement
from Petrograd that the P.altio fleet
had been reinforced by modern fight-
