SIDEWALK EXCAVATION
HALTED BY ENGINEER
Street Widening Plana Neces-
sitate Issuance of Order by
City Department.
Orders were Issued yesterday morn-
ing by the city engineering depart-
ment to contractors engaged in the
erection of buildings In the downtown
section not to make any excavations
under aldewalks.
This step by the city follows close
on the action taken at Friday's moot-
ing of the board of city commissioners
when Mayor Simmons and Commis-
sioner Walker declared themselves as
favorlnir an extensive program of
street widening In the congested
downtown section of the city.
Mayor Simmons declared that he
would have a survey of the business
section of the city made for the pur-
pose of selecting blocks which might
give parkage to street purposes. As
soon as this survey Is made which
possibly will be Monday a report
will be prepared and presented to
the city commissioners.
Several owners of business prop-
erty have appeared before the com-
mission asking that the streets be
widened and it Is tho plan of the
commissioners to widen these streets
as quickly as possible and thus not
Interfere with the erection of busi-
ness buildings which are contem-
plated. Commissioner Walker of the street
department together with City En-
gineer Wyss and the city attorney
will make the survey and report
hack to the commission probablv at

Tuesday morning; session.

Governor Appoints Directors
for Muskogee's 1917 Free
Exposition.

OKLAHOMA CITY April 7. Di-
rectors for the free Oklahoma state
fair located at Muskogee were ap-
pointed by Governor Williams today
as follows: 10. C. Harlan J. N. Koadi
.1. K. Connors S. H. Mayes and 11. W.
Ilibson of Muskogee and K. M. Mc-
Karlin of Tulsa.
The law creating the fair was en-
acted by the last legislature. An
opinion from the attorney general
given the governor stated that the law
was unconstitutional. Tho bill was
filed with the secretary of state by
the guvernor under the five-day rule
when the legislature is lu session
with the opinion attschei
Ho decided that tne courts would
be the proper place to declare the
final status cf the bill.
DRILL PRACTICE FOR MEN
OF COMPANY Y TOMORROW
Company "Y" a group of volunteers
who are in training for regular army
duty should they he called into the
service will meet Monday night in the
Y. M. C. A. gymnasium for their first
drill in marching and will be given a
series of setting-up exercises.
The men will bo drilled by Charles
Oilmore Mr. ltlxon teller of the Cen-
tral National hank and ex-drill ser-
geant of tho I'nlted States army; Os-
car Hefner and Kred Thompson. This
