STATEHOOD QUESTION
We are told that President Roose-
velt has his statehood proclamation
ready to issue as soon as the certifi-
cate of the voting and copy of the
constitution reaches Washington. It
was expected by all of us that this
would be done last week, as October
8th was the day set to canvass the
vote and we all supposed that Gov-
ernor Frantz wouldhave acopyof the
constitution ready as H K SHOULD
HAVE DONE.
First the Clay ton- Burford-Filson
board, after they had on October 8th
canvassed the vote from the county
abstracts and given out the results,
the next day decided that the law re-
quired them to canvass the vote from
the precinct poll books. There is
no special criticism against this as it
is a question of law atul lawyers dit-
f-r, b it deeming acq liescense quick-
est as to results, we got busy and
hurried the county clerks with their
poll books. 1 he boajd, after foui
days delay, resumed work Monda\
and now have canvassed 42 counties
and con finish in two days. The can-
vass by poll books makes little or no
change. I lieje will likely not be
