J. E. PAYNE,
A bachelor maid says that there are
just three ways to a man's heart-
one through his vanity, one through
his imagination and one straight over
his obstinacy.
o
When the time comes in the lives of
public men that they cannot forget
self long enough to strive for a sane
and sensible view of public issues,
they then have outlived their useful-
ness to the public and should forth-
with be relegated to the limbo of
quiet and unostentatious acticity.
As a rule the appointment of Louis
D. Brandeis to the United States Su-
preme court is not looked upon with
favor by corporation attorneys and
attorneys who have attained distinc-
tion and in some instances made fam-
ous by their close alliance with gi-
gantic monied interests. As for Bran-
deis, his chief fame or distinction
rests almost wholly upon his champ-
ionship of the rights of labor and of
the workingman. It is possible that he
is just a little radical along that line,
DRUDGERY.
Some seem to be dissatisfied. Their
clutch has slipped in slow. They think
that life is all a drudge and nothing
seems to go. Of course we drudge and
drudge we must. The Lord has so or-
dained. No greater blessing can be
ours than to hard work be trained.
It is with us and not our jobs, that
things are out of whack, to s.hool
ourselves to like our work is not so
hard a knack. There is a bright and
pleasant side to every little task. A
ray of sunshine and a smile puts on
the cheerful mask. The clouds oi
gloom don't stick around, when we get
in the swim, and learn the way to like
our work and make of it a whim. The
only way is: Plod along, cut out the
anxious mood. Be calm and strive
to do your best. You'll find it not
so rude. This life is what we
: make it to a very great extent, a
place of happines and peace or one of
discontent. Then why not cut out wor-
ries and forget ourselves and dig, and
have a worth while purpose; get in
line and play it big.—Exchange.
ton, says the Filipinos are ready and
able to govern themselves and that
passage of the measure gtanting
them independence would be followed
by the formation of an island Repub-
lic.
Recently published statistics show
ing the progress of the islanders since
the year of American occupation go to
suport Quezon's confident assertions.
The Chief Justice and two Associate
Justices •){ the Supreme Court of the
Philippines are natives. Presiding
over courts of first instances are
twenty-two Filipino Judges. In the
civil service there are 7,394 Filipinos,
1,987 Americans. Native school teach-
ers to the number of 9,306 give in-
struction in English. A half million
children are in school; as many more
would attend if facilities were pro-
vided.
The San Francisco Bulletin, from
which these figures are taken, re-
marks; "So it may be that the Phil-
ippines could toddle along very well

CAR SHORTAGE IN KANSAS
SAYS R. R. OFFICIALS.
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Feb. 10.—A
shortage of freight cars greater than
at any time in recent years now ex-
ists in Kansas City and its trade ter-
ritory, according to railroad officials.
Several reasons are given as the
causes.
In the last three months farmers
of Kansas and Nebraska have mark-
eted much grain. The demand for
freight cars to move the grain could
not be satisfied. Many cars that
should be in the territory are stand-
ing loaded at seaboard and Gulf
ports, it is said.
