JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct, 18.
What undoubtedly will prcve to
bs one of the most destructive of
storms last night anu tonight
swept the entire Florida peninsula
doing damage estimated at several
million dollars. Forty thousand
s-juare miles of territory south of
Jacksonville has been without any
means of communication with tils
outside world for more than twen-
ty-four hours. The last report
lorm this section embracing all
that territory south of line from
Tampa to St, Augustine told of
hurricane winds, and rapidly fail-
ii,g barometers. The orange crop
in that territory and the vast
trucking industry probably aro
ruined. Along the eastern coast
many lives are believed to have
been lost and the property damage
is believed great. The maximum
wind velocity, 70 miles an hour it-
corded here at 7 o clock tonight,
when the center of disturbance
appeared to have passed up the
Atlantic coast toward Savannah
Mayport, at the mouth of the St.
Johns river, experienced p wind
of 80 to 90 miles an hour, and one
half of the houses there were
wrecked. There has been no
communication with any point
south of Jacksonville, with the ex-
ception of St. Augustine, since
late this afternoon and all wires
' north were severed with one ex
ception shortly after dark.
A heavy downpour of rain ac-
compani.d the high winds every-
where. At St, Augustine, houses
in the business section were
flooded tonight at low tide with
promise of immense damage to
business property when the high
tide came in. The city is in dark-
