THE TEIP TO THE CANAL
Then , a natural fueling of anxiety le*t v m' thing
.ntoward may hapfien U> the pf'--1'L nt-elect dur i; j
his travel*; and this feeling will be relieved by the
de< i;on that Judge Taft* journey to the Panama
Canal shall be made on an American cpi> He will
b* safer on one of our warshi|(* than he ij, wh
traveling by rail—and probably just a* taf as wh
he ;« playing (jolf in hi* style.
There |4 really no ground in any case for th
annety about Judge Taft * bodily safety except th
great liking that everybody baa for him end the gr -it "
d**ire of everybody that he shalW-rve the country T„
a* president. Many individual* ha%e the sam • kind
'if anxiety in their own case* when they travel with *:T %r
unusually large sum of money or special va!- .r
liable papers in their pocket. It *eems to them that t.
something must happen simply because of their in- .^.
tea*/- wish that nothing wrong «hall happ-^-n. They
would make the same journey with jtut eppugh mon- • -
ey to pay their way or a bunch of old envelopes I
never dream of danger. This shows where the seat
of this anxiety about Judge Taft is—in the general
knowlwlge that hi* public relations to tiua countr
at this time mak" him an uncommonly pt.-";ous < -
well as weighty human package.
The more firmly this deserved estimate of Judge
Taft's value to the country is held, the less, anxiety
there should be over his nccssary goint's and com-
ing*. The luck of the United Stat, s i* prover- r-4
bial. and it is safe to depend upon that luek in vt!
striking an instance. Judge Taft's visit to the eanul
—whi"h he make* a* a matter of duty -will give him
a mental rest such h" has not had sin"" the opening
the recent presidential campaign. Th" valu • of
Irs own eye upon the work and problems of the
Panama f'anal cannot be doubted.

CABINET MAKING
The first rumors about Mr. K/iox were to the ef-
fect that he was not w illing to give up his wat in th,.
senate for the secretaryship of state. Later reports
have it that he has decided to accept. The whole
country can rejoice at this decision. It is true that
perhaps it* strongest member leaves the serial -; but
Mr Taft has shown his wisdom and keen knowledge
of men in getting Mr. Knox, and th- country gains
in the cabinet all that it loses from the senate, and
more, too. So l'ar we have Knox as - retarv of state
and Hitchcock as postmaster Kcneral. This is a fine
beginning; it is difficult to see how it could have
been bettered. Mr. Knox i- on- the ablest lawyers
of the country; he has known cabinet service, and as ■ -■ i*tv. -
attorney general proved triie to h:* client, the gr-at
I'nitcd States, cutting loose from all previous alli-
ances. It is an admirable arrangement all around.
Mr Root will make good the loss of .Mr Knox in the
senate and Mr. Knox i* as good a successor to Mr.
