agriculturalist looks
for bumper wheat
crop this year
(Special to the State Capital.)'
Enid, Okla., April 18—The prospects for
a bumper wheat crop all . through tho
wheat belt this year, are very good, ac-
cording to J. K. Walter, the local grain
broker. The crop statistic* gent out L.y
the department of agriculture and which
is correct up to April 1, gives the wheat
the largest percentage, 913.
Something over 31,000,000 acres are
planted in wheat. 500,000 more acres than
waa planted in 1D07. Last year th. total
number of acres planted waa 28,500,000
of which over 2,500,000 acres were aban-
doned, the heaviest amounting to loss than
25,000,000 acres. The cause for the great
loss last year is attributed to the green
bugs.
The Oklahoma condition is credited 94.
being one point lower than the Kansas
estimate. The department .of agriculture
estimates the total crop of Oklahoma it
20,000,000, while the Kansas , stimate is
placed at 105,000,000 acres. The total yield
for Oklahoma has taken a .lump on ac-
count of largely red jced acreage, caused
by « general apprehension of the green
bugs.
The supply of old wheat on hand at the
various markets b, woefully small and
many mills ln this state and Kansas will
have to secure wheat In Kansas City and
elsewhere to keep their plants In opera-
tion until the new crop is harvested, ok-
lahoma will rank witli Texas In placing
Its 1 SOS wheat on the market* first. tiood
prices are promised the Oklahoma farm-
ers for their wheat.
