fear expressed throughout the Cherokee
Nation over the removal of the restric-
tions. On the ground that the grafters
will take advantage of the Indians, espe-
cially the fullblooda. There has been an
'amazing amount of stealing from Indi-

all through the Nation. This has been

Holdenville. Okla., Fob. 4. D. S. Cox.
deputy sheriff of this county, was shot
today by (". E. Sneed and diod a few
minutes afterwards. Sn«ed states the
deed was done accidentally, which is sub
stantlated by other circumstances. Sneed
is operating a shooting gallery and he
and Cox were in a rear tent examining
a revolver which Sneed was trying to
sell to the deputy. All of the cartridge
were thought to have been removed but
after snapping the trigger two or three
times It fired, the bullet passing through
♦he breast. Cox .eaves a wife and one
hild. Kneed Is in the custodv of the
sheriff.

released from Matteawan " asylum on
habeas «orpus proceedings. He said to-

habeas corpus. "Harry Thaw has been
accquitted of the eharg. of murder and
Is not a criminal." said he. "He |8 at
Matteawan for the purpose of observa-
tion only. Pf the conditions and sur-
roundings there are such that his health
may be Impaired It Is Incumbent on the
state board of lunacy to have him re-
moved to an Institution where other con-
ditions and surroundings prevail. '

amson and his wife lived at Gage,
but occasionally went to their ranch
about three miles northwest of Fargo,
and were at the latter place when
the shooting occured Bailey and his
wife were living on a farm across the
road northeast of the Adamson ranch.
On the evening of June 11th., 1907,
Willie Halley and wife were returning
from Fargo, driving a two-horse bug-
gy ln which they were carrying a
newly purchased oil stove. Adamson
met them as they were passing his
gate and began abusing them, calling
them vile names and swearing he in-
tended to kill them both A hand to-
hand combat ensued, in which Adam-
son took from the buggy the grates of
the oil stove and threw them at
Bailey. In the meantime, Mrs Adam-
son ran out from the house and fired
three shots at Bailey and her thirteen-
year-old niece also ran out with a
rifle Which she tried to give to Adam-
son. When Adamson turned to get
the rifle. Bailey took from his buggv
his wife's revolver and fired three
shots at Adamson, who fell and ex-
pired Instantly.
Though there were no witnesses to
the grim tragedy except Mrs. Adam-
son her little niece und Mrs Bailey
