Miss Hellen W. Rhctr, Daughter
of Charleston's Mayor, Chris
tened the Cruiser-Descrip-
tion of Fighting Ship.
Newport News, Va., Jan. 23.—The
protected cruiser Charleston, the larg-
est and moat powerful vessel of its
type in the American navy, was laun-
ched today in I he presence of a large
crowd which Included u party of dis-
tinguished parson* from the city of
Charleston, 8. C., a large number of
naval officers from Washington and
other Invited guests.
The event was very successful and
the ship rode out on the James river
without leaning to starboard or port
Miss Helen W. Rhett, daughter of the
mayor of Charleston, christened the
cruieer as It started down the ways.
Following the launching was a lun-
cheon given by the officials of the
shipyard in honor of the sponsor.
The new cruiser Charleston, contin-
ues the name of the 3,000 ton vessel
wrecked evcral years ago in the Phil-
ippines. There will l,e but two oth-
er vessels in the United States navy of
the Charleston class. They are thte
Milwaukee nnd the St. Louis, now un-
der construction. While designed pri-
marily for speed, they will be at the
en me time formidable lighting ma-
chines. They will have the most pow-
erful ordnance fo rvessels of their
claas and have the highest speed com-
patible with good cruising qualities
and great radius of action. They so
closely approach the type of second
class ormored cruisers that they might
easily be mistaken for such.

Panama, Jnn. 23.—Heated debates on
religious questions marged the sittings
of the constitutional convention held
I t night nnd this morning. Several
" the members favored an arrange-

tween the Colombian government and
the church, while others desired the
absolute separation of church and suite
At this nfternoon's meeting the dis-
cussion of the matter was progressing
with apparently no prospect of a con-
clusion being reached \fcrhen Dr. Ama-
dor proposed the following:
"The profession of all religions as al-
«o the exercise of the forms of worship
shall be free, without other limitations
than respect for Christian morality and
public ordor. Nevertheless, It Is rec-
ognized that tbo Catholic religion is
that of a majority of the Inhabitants of
the republic and the laws will provide
assistance toward the formation of a
seminary in the capital and missions
