Okmulgee, I. T., Jan. 12.—While nc
boom Is apparent this city Is exper-
iencing a general rejuvenation of trade
relations, and several new and expen-
sive buildings are under course of erec-
tion. The Okmulgee National Bank
has just been finished. It Is a three
story $30,000 structure. The Bozarth
hotel is another block of stone build-
ings Just finisher J. H. Mebrey. the
local capitalist, announces that he will
shortly begin the erection of a three
story brick hotel with 160 feet front-
age on east Sixteenth street. Those

extension of the Ozark and Cherokee

The recent act which prohibited the
launch'Vg of any more government

lor building towns that were needed

the consent of the Indian allottee for
the building of a city upon his or her
land. The allottee was required to af-
fix signature to a large quantity of
right of occupancy" forms and these
forms, when also signed by the com.
pany constituted the title of the lot j
purchaser.
In order to carry out promises the
companies, upon the adoption of the
"highest bidder" plan of selling Creek
lands by the Interior department, de-
cided to get the allottee to consent to
fiat price of $50 per acre. This was
ually accomplished. The allottees
..pre then taken before the Dawes
commission where they signified their
willingness to sell all but their home-
steads at the agreed price. The Dawes
commission then recommended that
the secretary of the Interior 'remove
the "highest bidder"- restrictions and
allow the allotment upon which the
town stood to be sold to the applicants
This the secretary promptly turned
down and gave Instructions that the
land must be sold as other lahda, to
that the highest bidder can become the
Mr. Hitchcock^ decision thus means
that the highest bidder ca nbecome the
sole owner to the land upon which a
valuable town stands. |
