WISDOM OF A
NEBRASKA MAN
When it come to an expression of
level-headed opinion T. li. Hord, of
Nebraska, can be relied on for some-
thing accurate.
lie ascribes the rapid expansion of
the market ward movement of cattle
to the activity of the man. here, there j^,
and everywhere, who is unostenta-
tiously raising a few head and send-
ing them to market.
The statisticians cannot get a line
on this man. They can size up the
big feed lots and draw approximations
from the number of thin cattle bought
at the big market centers but the so-
called little fellow has them up a
stump.
As a matter of fact farmers In the
corn belt are raiding a whole lot more
cattle than they were a few years ago
and the amount of feeding to be done
this fall cannot be determined by the
patronage of the feeder markets.
Every trade and farm paper pub-
lished in the United States has elo-
quently described the pernicious ef-
fects that follow exclusive grain farm-
ing. The weight of this campaign is
now being felt. Mixed farming is now
more common than years ago. With
many the axiom, "never sell anything
j off the farm that has to be lhauled"
id a working motto.
Large areas of the country that bavo
been depleted of fertility by long con-
tinued grain farming are being reha-
bilitated In live stock.
The wen who follow the business
tod-ay ean be classed as combina-
tion farmers and stockmen. Thous-
ands are raising from a load of steers
up and these native bred cattle will
swell the recelnpts of finished beeves
during the coming season to no small
extent.

stock of the trust
The cash alone wae 91.000.000 more than
Mr. Schwab originally had the gall to
ask. Counting the stock at par, the prlco
wui three and a third times the sum ask-
ed. From this we learn what the wiz-
ards of finance sometimes do In the way
of capitalisation.
If Mr. SchWab had pocketed the entire
price he would have made pomethlng
handsome on the deal, but he did not. And
here we oome to the second point. The
high financiers who be«t Mr Hchwab up
from 99.000,000 to 990.000.000 did not do It
out of pure altruism nor because thOy had
fallen desperately In love with Mr. Schwab
and wanted to load him down to the guard
with wealth. Far different.
In dealing With Mr Drepser Mr. Schwab
stated that 9>.000.0u0 of the stock was to
go to J. P. Morgan & Co. That shows
hat became of . ome of It. Rut Mr.
ted that Morgan was to get
one-fourth of the 920.000.000 of stock, or
90.000.000, and this soems to have been
additional to the 92.000,000 which wa* to
go to the banking houso of Morgat & Co.
How much more was separated from Mr.
Schwab In one way and another does not
appear. Ho may have got awuy with his
original price and he may not.
