Meets With Bad Accident
While Crossing Track.

Shawnee, Okla., July 1.—John Pon-
der a blacksmith for Contractor Cal-
lahan. In attempting to cross the Santa
Fe track, near Main treet last night,
fell in some way upon the tracK and be-
neath the wheels of a moving train,
which crushed his left arm near the
shoulder. There was some of his
friends with him at the time the acci-
dent happened and he was picked up
and afier being placed upon a stretch-
er removed to the office of Dr. Scott,
over Harryman's drirg store, where ha
remained until an amputation was per-
formed' 'by Dr. Scott, assisted by Dr.
Willey, after which he was removed to
Dr. Wllley'a residence where he will
remain for the present.
Mr. Ponder's home is said to be at
Frankford, Kentucky, where he has a
wife and children, who have been no-
tified of his condition.

Oklahoma City, July 1.—The free de-
livery limits of the 'Oklahoma City
poatofflce will tomorrow be extended
so as to include the folowlng area:
All of the South Oklahoma.
All territory between South Okla-
homa and the Frisco terminal; all of
Main street, addition.
All of Orchard park; all of Parker
& Colcord additions; all of Northwest
addition.
All of Highland Park and all addi-
tions south of It; three blocks of Mar-
quette; all of Dale addition; all of
Scott addition.
All of Oak Park to Laird; all of Phil-
lips & Mead addition to Phillips Street.
All of Military addition and the M.
K. & T. depots just south of It.
All other portions of the city which
have heretofore been served by carriers.
It will be neeesary in some cises
where settlements are sparse to re-
quire those living remote from neigh-
borhoods to put up boxes at some other
residence in order to reduce the area
to be covered by the carriers. It has
been necessary in order to Include tho
greater portion of the city, to make
the carrier districts large. It will,
therefore, be necessary to reduce the
walking distance by the plan suggested
here. Just where it will be necessary
to put boxes at some other point than
the place of residence will be deter-
mined later.
The entire business district will re-
ceive either four or five regular deliv-
eries a day. An eight o'clock, p. ra.,
special collection and delivery will al-
so be made within a restricted area
of the business district. The residence
district will receive" two deliveries a
day. *

The change takes effect at once, as
the land offices reopen for business to-

COTTON CROP

Holdenville, I. T., July 1.—The
gloomy prophecies about the cotton
crop are now being materially revised
and it is considered that there is rea-
son to expect a very good crop this
year. Cotton has grown more in the
last week than it had in five or six
weeks before. F. D. Johnson, who has
1,500 acres of cotton about twelve
miles south of town, claims that DO per
event of his crop is a fair stand. He
has 150 acres planted on prairie land
and Its condition Is good. The balance
If his vast acreage is all on timber
land. It is all first crop land, and while
flot as far advanced as it should have
been, there is ample lime for more
than an average crop If favorable con-
ditions continue.

* THIA JOHNSON.

Vinita. 1. T.. July 1.—Full details of
the killing of Cynthia Johnson have
been learned by the officers here.
James S. Neal went to the Johnson
home yesterday and beat Mrs. John-
son, a widow. 40 years of age. with ft
club until she became Insensible be-
•ause she had said that he killed some
of her geese. He then found a revolv-
er in the house and shot her twice and
she soon expired. He left at once and
escaped to Kansas. Mrs. Johnson's
daughter, who lives >*ith her, was away
when the crime had been committed
and did not return until two hours af-
terwards, and \vhen she returned she
found her mother dead in the yard.
The hogs had attacked the corpse and
eaten It until the dead woman was be-
yond recognition. The body was ship-
ped to Missouri for burial.
Three men were arested and brpught
here for aiding the murderer in get-
ting away.

Washington, July 1.—A study of for-
est fires, begun in the South this sprlng
wiii be continued during the summer
in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin
by a party under H. J. Tompkins, of
the bureau of forestry. Mr. Tompkins,
will inquire into the methods used by
the Inhlbitants In putting out fires and
determine, If possible, how these meth-
ods may be improved. He will then at-
tempt to devise some general system
of fire control for the states studied,
so that the bureau, If called on, will be
able to furnish their legislatures with
recommendations for fire lawn based
on a thorough knowledge of the con-
ditions.

Washington. July 1.—One hundred
acres of land In the sand hills of the
Dismal River Forest Reserve, Nebras-
ka. were planted this spring by the
bureau of forestry. On 80 acres 100,-
000 pine seedlings were sowed with
seer. The work ewlll continue this
summer. The nursery will be enlarged

colored, suspected of the murder ot
Jno. L. Phillips was taken from
jail here last night and lynched by a
mob. Four negroes who were confin-
ed In the jail also were taken by the
mob and beaten Into Insensibility.

armed Confederate soldier.
DELAY OF MININFTOINK
San Francisco, July 1.—One probable
factor of delay during the long voyage
to this port from New York of the
steamer Mionetonk. was the condition
of her boilers, which have been found
to be In bad shape.
It has been found that the hollers
need a thorough overhauling and it is |
not unlikely that as much as $10,000
! may have to be expended to place them
iu good condition.
KIEL RACES
NAVAHO WAS FIRST TO CROSS
FINISHING LINE.
Kiel, Prussia, July 1.—In the handi-
cap yacht races from Eckernfoerde to
Kiel today, the Nabaho was tho first to
cto tho finishing line, followed close-
ly by i he Orion. The Therese was third
and Commodore fourth. In the schoon-
er class the Hamburg beat the Meteor
sailed by Emperor William, by 1 1-2
minutes. A strong, gusty northwest
wind was blowing.
The official awards were as follows:
Tho Empress Iduna won the cruis-
ing race on time allowance; tho Adela
was second on time alowance and the
Hamburg was third.
The Meteor, which allowed the Iduna
forty minutes, was not officially placed
In the race.

A M ERICA N SQUADRON STARTS
FOR ENGLAND FRIDAY.
Kalhindborg, July 1. -The American
squadron, consisting of the flagship
Kenrsarge, the San Francisco and the
Chicago will sail for Splthead, Eng-
land, Friday and will there meet the
M:n bias, which passed through the
Kiel canal.
Rear Admiral Cotton In giving his
personal opinion of the visit to the
Kail, said:
"Tho happy intercourse between the
officers of high rank, and all the sur-
face Indications, appear to show that
the object of the visit was accomplish-
ed. Everything possible was done by
Emperor William, Prlnco Henry and
others to make our stay pleasant,
which was reciprocated. The squad-
ron will arrive in the inner harbor of
Portsmouth at 9:80 a. m. July 7."

Okemah, I. T., July 1.—The Okemah
Commercial club met In their club
rooms In the Dexter block. Several
matters of imprtance to Okemah and
the surrounding country were discuss-
ed, and some very interesting speeches
were made In regard to getting In clos-
er touch with the farmers.
It was decided to call a special meet-
ing of the club to formulate some plan,
and arrange a meeting with the farm-
ers and if possible, perfect an organi-
zation that would band them together
simular to the one now in existence In
Shawnee, Okla.
The Commercial club Is wide awake,
and sees the need of helping the farm-
er In this section of the territory to
better his condition. There should he
more wheat sown, and the club will see
that plenty of seed wheat, is furnished
in time.
The Okemah Commercial club is an
organization of about seventy mem-
bers. and they have done much for thf
1 up building of Okemah and settling thf
surrounding country. The club has a
nice hall well fitted with new furni-
ture, and also has in connection two
large offices where visitors to the city
are always welcome to call and become
familiar with Okemah and the sur-
roundings, and where they will find all
the leading daily papers.
