The ilrst news of the absorption of
several eastern railroads into ono lari
pool set our democratic contempt
rarles on their ears and they have sim
been eagerly looking for evidence of
greed on the part of the aforesaid
pool. A few days ago the eastern dis-
patches indicated the probability of a
general strik. among the employes of
the Jersey Central, one of the roads
absorbed. This news was Joyously re-
ceived by democratic paragraphe -s
and editorial writers, and for several
days the octupus, personified in the
Jersey Central officials, has been tin
butt of their more or less scathiiu:
satire.
The merits in the case, however, do
not justify their statements. A short
time ago the engineers, liremen, train-
men and telegraphers in the employ
of the road made demands for in-
creased pay, holding that they wer
being renumerated at a rate low.
thuu that paid to employes of othe
roads. After several conferences th
company left the matter with its gen-
eral and division superintendents, with
the result that the men are continuing
* ontentedly at work, the strike cloudv
all dispersed.
But the basis of settlement attract*
us most. Were this railroad company
the grinding combination, the inlqutious
aggregation ttf capital our democrat!
contemporaries have painted them, th
men would have been coerced and 'ii-
slaved, but they were not. The
gineers and firemen were grantt |
increase in wages and the trainmen
and telegraphers will be treated in like
manner as soon as they can show that
they are not as well paid as the em-
ployees of other roads, which th y
have thus far been unable to do.
Our democratic friends have hem
propagating false ideas concerning this
matter: will they correct them? Will
they announce their error and apolo-
gize for it? Will they admit the tiuth
which every one els.. s<
continue attempting in
to persuade the Aim ri.
