TEAM PLAYED BALL
Westmoreland Pitched and Succeeded
Io Fanning out Fourteen of The
Member* of The Teiaa Team.
Friday's Daily.
Seven to oothing, in favor of Law-
' ton, was the Boore of the ball game
played at Gainsville, Texas, yesterday
between Lawton and Gainsville.
Lawtons battery was Westmoreland
- and Connor. Evidently the Lawton
boys were in good shape again, and
Westmoreland must have been in tine
mettle, for be performed h<- remarkable
feat of fanning out fourteen of the
Gainsville pla-ers. They just simply
oouldn't hit him, and those who did
never lived to get past first base. When
one considers that the total number of
put-outs were twenty-seven, fourteen
of which were struck out by Westmore-
land, it will bs readily perceived that
be was doing business swift and plenty.
Lawton plays Gainsville today and
tomorrow, and then goes to Sulphur
Springs, I T„ for Sunday, Monday and
Tussday. The oitizens of Sulphur
Springs claim to have an exceptionally
strong salaried team, and one that has
not as yet been defeated. Yeager,
the south paw, will pitch for Lawton
in the Sunday game at Sulphur Springs
and it is safe to predict that the Sul
pburites will known they have been in
a ball game by the time the game is
over. Fortunately Lawton is well
supplied with pitchers in Westmore-
land, Sigrnon, Wolf, Kay and Cheshire,
beside Yeager who U specially engaded
for the trip, so that the crippling of a
pitcher nnd not necessarily cripple the
team, Connor has made good behind
the bat, and has a whip to aecond that
is absolute death to any player who
attempts to steal from first to second
Joseph T. Pulliam of Temple, who
owns a tine farm in that vioinity, and
who bIso owns consideiable real estate
in Lawton, including the C avenue prop-
erty occupied by the Ooodner book
store, was in the city yesterday. He bad
received several letters from b party
here in Lawton urging bim to sign a re-
monstrance against paving C avenue,
and yesterday, while in the city, several
parties oalled upon him and attempted
to induce bim to eign the remonstrance.
But Mr Pulliam could not Me it in
that light. He told them be believed in
city improvements He said he had
built bis oeniaub walk in compliance
with the requirement and he believed it
a good thing, and was getting ready to
put In similar walks in front of other
property owned by him. That he be
lieved the way to build a city was to be
liberal iu publio improvements, and in
bis opinion the paving of C avenue
would enhance the value of his property
along tint street, hence he was opposed
to any remonslranoe; was heartily i
favor of paving, and the city couldn't
order it any too soon to suit him.
Such men as Joe Pulliam are the kind
of public-spirited men to have interest-
ed in a city.
