Oklahoma City, May ft.—[Special].
For the week ending Monday, May
3, 1897.
During the first five days of the week
the weather was unusually cold. Sun.
day and Monday, only, were warm
sunshiny, seasonable days.
The average temperature for the
week, 50.7, was 5 degrees below nor-
mal.
Unusually heavy rains occurred
throughout northern, eastern, central
sections on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The very heaviest rains were through
Custer, Washita, Blaine, Kingfisher.
Canadian, Oklahoma, Logan, Payne,
Pottawatomie and Lincoln counties,
Oklahoma territory, and Osage, Simi-
nole, Creek and Cherokee nations, In-
dian territory.
Wheat has grown rapidly and looks
well. Wheat, which in some portions
of western and eentral sections was
reported apparently considerably in-
jury from some cause, is reported this
week to have recovered its color and
to be alright. The present outlook
everywhere now indicates by far the
largest crop ever grown; it stands
thick on the ground, shows a rank
growth, has a good color, the cool I
weather being especially favorable. J
The heavy rains have interfered with
farm work throughout northern, east-
urn, central and western sections, and
cotton planting is not yet completed, j
and there is much complaint of a poor '
stund of corn, some of which, on ac i
count of washouts and Hooded low-
lands will require replanting second |
time; it is thought too, that some of :
the cotton planted will not come up
on account of soil being too cool and
wet. llrat-s and oats throughout these
sections have a fair growth, but warm,
dry weather is needed for corn, cotton,
grass and oats. Potatoes and other
vegetables are growing finely. Or-
chards and vineyards are ladened with
fruit and continue promising as noted
n former bulletins.
The rainfall throughout the south-
ern section was much less than in
other sections; It was, hosvever, above
normal and amply sufficient for all
needs. Karm work has progressed
_,lripht, corn and cotton have been
cultivated.
Grass, corn and oata have show n a
good growth, and all crops hayegrewn
well except cotton, which is some-
what backward on account of the con-
tinued cool weather.
From no part of either territory have
bugs or insects been reported doing
