A NurpiiMMl surprise Party.
Friday evening a surprise was given
Miss Hlunchc Me Kinney at the corner
of Logun ami Division streets. The
party met at John Patton'* on Wash-
ington aveuue, preparatory to going
to Miss McKinney's house. While
waiting tln time of departure they
were surprised by u stern rap at the
door. One of the party answered ami
Sargeant Mann, of Co. A, who asked if
Mr. Moek was there, to which he was
answered yes. but he would not show-
up. So Mann ordered his 1'iur privates
Brewer, Webb. Smith and Wood, also
Sargeunt Donaho. to guard the house
while he went after written orders,
but after about half an hour's guard
Mr. Mock decided to couie out. As In-
opened the door the squad surrounded
him and he showed tight, and tried
vigorously to escape, but in vain The
squad marched him to the armory and
drilled him until about ten o'clock.
Among the surprised crowd were the
following: Misses Ella and Eliza Old-
ham, Hess Heed, Miss I'ritchett. Flor-
ence Patton, Angie l'enny and <trace
Khinehart, Mr. Will Young. I larence
Johnson. Ferrow, Paul Foster. Lugene
Turner. Kalph Metcalf. Hort Marshal
and Arthur Halanger. The party en-
joyed themselves until about twelve

a little incident in his life which caused
him to devote so much time to the
study of the languages of other na-

"Several years ago." he said, "in com-
pany with a couple of friends, I took a
leisurely trip through the southern
part of this country and Mexico. Not
one of us could understand a word of
Spanish, and after we got into the
Mexican territory our conversation
with the natives was necessarily of a
limited nature unless we happened to
come across some one who had resided
011 the borderland long enough to learn
a few Americanisms.
"One boiling afternoon we decided to
drive from Llanos, where we were then
stopping, to Cruees, thirty miles dis-
tant. The road was clearly defined
n- and was bordered here and there by
the mesquito bushes and cactus that
were sprinkled over the hillsides. The
dazzling light that was reflected from
the white sands and rocks added to our
discomfort, and before the trip was
more than half completed we were
heartily sick of it. At last we came to

one of the narrow valleys. It was the
