Great Britain's Expedition Into Thibet
Brings Up War Talk—Fear Express-

In Russian military circles the in-
creasing possibility of war with Great

I ttcult to realize that our conception of

I may be very far from what actually
takes place. Now, light is estimated
in round figures to travel at 100,000
miles per second, and if wo estimate
the length of the beam that is admitted
by our shutter when making a snap
shot, we shall get some idea of the
enormous iiossibilitles of energy ex
pended In producing the image. For
Instance, we set our shutter for the
one-twentieth of a second; that means
a stream of light 9,500 miles long has
entered our lens and impinged 011 the
plate, and even for one-thousandth of
a second exposure means a stream 190,
miles long to work >fith; or again, ifj
we have occasion to give live minutes j
exposure, the light that enters the
camera last had not left the sun's sur-
face when we began the exposure.

MAGNET IN AN OPERATION.
Patient's Life Saved by D.awing Up
a Nail He Had Swallowed.
The story of a curious surgical oper

been communicated to the London sur

A bronchoscope, which consists of
a tube, the Inner surface of which Is
highly polished to serve as a reflector,
and an electric lamp arranged so as
to throw a strong light on the tube,
was passed Into the bronchial tube
and then withdrawn.
This process was repeated for six
days with larger and larger tubes, and
then an eight millimeter tube was in-
serted to a depth of nearly 15 inches.
A magnet had been specially sinde to
put into the tube, but it was too short
to lit and the coughing of the patient
forced a suspension of the operation.

Farmers' Review,
Chicago, July 22, 1903.
Most of the prairies in the United
Sthies have ceased to exist. Man has
broken them up with orchards, for-
ests and farm buildings. Hut in
Western Canada the prairies still
stretch grandly from horizon to hori-
zon as yet unmarred by the hand of
man, save where the Iron road has
been laid. To a city man there is
something deliclously restful about
the vast grassy solitudes.
Numerous clumps of trees mark the
course of the Assinlboine river, which
keeps in sight of the railroad for somo
distance.
Grass i: one of the notable things
about all the landscape of Western
Canada. It is a remarkable fact that
the entire length of the Canadian Pa-
cific railway from its eastern termi-
