BEN R. COWLING
Tne funeral of Ben R. Cowling
last Sunday afternoon was very
largely attended.
The crowd over-flowed the res-
idence of his brother-in-law. Wal-
ter S. Mayo, and filled the yard.
Some have stated they could not
get dose enough to even hear the
voice of the speakers who were
conducting the funeral services.
The procession to the cen.irtery
was joined along the road until
the throng numbered several hun-
dreds.
Why this demonstration? Just
in ordinary farmer? No! Ber. R.
rowling had been a soldier. Just
an ordinary soldier? No! he was
more than an ordinary soldier. Hi-
comrade< of the A. E. F. knew it
and felt it. It was not idle for-
mality that caused many of them
to wish to give him burial with
full military honors, and that
caused them to voluntarily don
thei' uniforms to attend his fun-
eral and A. E. F. men in uniform
insi<ted that they be allowed to act
