Southern Cabinet officers
Apropos of the more or less gener-
al demand that a Southern man be
appointed by the president to fill one
cabinet position, the record of South-
ern cabinet officers is recalled. Mont-
gomery Blair, of Maryland, Edward
Bates, of Missouri and James Speed,
of Kentucky, were members of Lin-
coln's first cabinet, and Mr. Speed
continued to serve in the second cab-
inet. In Grant's first cabinet were
Cheswell, of Maryland, and Akerman,
of Georgia, and in his seoond were
Bristow, of Kentucky, Creswell, of
Maryland, and for a brief period, J.
W. Marshall, of Virginia' Hayes had
among his advisers Carl Schurz, of
Missouri, Goff, of West Virginia, and
Key and Maynard of Tennessee. Gar-
field called Hunt, of Louisiana to the
navy department and Arthur was
served by him for more than a year.
Harrison had the advice of Elkins, of
West Virginia, and Noble, of Missou-
ri. Gary of Maryland and Hitchcock,
of Missouri, sat with McKinley, and
Hitchcock is sitting with Roosevelt.

Beads Like a Miracle.
Moravia, N. Y., Dec. 12th.— (Spe-
cial)—Bordering on the miraculous is
the case of Mrs. Benj. Wilson of this
place. Suffering from Sugar Diabetes,
she wasted away till from weighing
200 lbs. she barely tipped the scales
at 130 lbs. Dodd's Kidney Pills cured
her. Speaking of her cure her hus-
band says:—
"My wife suffered everything from
Sugar Diabetes. She was sick four
years and doctored with two doctors,
but received no benefit. She had so
much pain all over her that she could
not rest day or night. The'doctor said
that she could not live.
"Then an advertisement led me to
try Dodd's Kidney Pills and they help-
ed her right from the first. Five
boxes of them cured her. Dodd'6 Kid-
ney Pills were a God-Sent remedy to
us and we recommend them to all suf-
fering from Kidney Disease."
Dodd's Kidney Pills cure all Kidney
Diseases including Bright's Disease,
and all kidney aches, including Rheu-

The Tactile Sense.
Ir a series of experiments on the
topography of the tactile sensibility,
mide on children and adults, M. N.
Vaschide has been able to show clear-
ly the relation which exists between
the circulation of the blood and the
tactile sense, reports Cosmos. From
these experiments it appears that there
exists a close relation between the de-
termination of the measure of the
sense of touch and blood circulation.
Tactile sensibility varies under the
influence of a decreasing blood pres-
sure, caused by compression or
change of position, or of congestion,
the delicacy or torpidity of the tactile
sense being immediately dependent on
the circulation. Between the varia-
tions of the normal state which repre-
sents the conditions of habitual deter-
minations, and the different states of
the circulation there seems to be a
strict relation, these states ranging
from an extreme delicacy when the
blood circulates frcJely and constantly
to a condition of hyperexcitability i
states bordering on congestion.

Ncvel Fire Escape.
Everybody is more or less familiar
with fire escapes and their uses, but it
has been demonstrated that fire es-
capes are absolutely useless in case of
panic. Tower fireproof fire escapes
are supposed to be entirely safe, but

panic follows and many lives are lost | ^ gjri acknowledges her lack of

Montreal, Nov. 15.—Major Allison
Edwards, United States Consul Gen
cral, who returned to-day from a visit
to his home at Fargo, North Dakota,
said in an interview: "The proper
way to describe the manner in which
the people of North Dakota are com-
ing over into Western Canada is to
say they are coming over in droves.
Among the people there did not seem
to be any thought of there being a
boundary line at all. It is simply a
question," added the major, "of there
not being any more land in North
Dakota and the surrounding States,
and the people are flocking to Canada
to get good farms. Naturally the
number that will come over will in-
crease all the time, and I may say
the people you are getting are the
best people in the west. They are
well supplied with money and are
well acquainted with the conditions
under which they will have to work."

Science Finds New Animal.
A beastie novel to zoologists and all
>ther scientific "ists" is a cross be-
ween a dog and a raccoon and has
ately made a trip from northern Ja-

ioological gardens. The Japanese call
t a white fox and the American sci-
entists say that it probably resem-
iles a white Arctic fox more than any
ither creature, but they are christen-
ng it a raccoon dog. The director of
he New York zoological park finds a
mzzle in its habits, for all allied spe-
'.ies of animals are inclined to hiber-
late in winter, and borrow suitable
ledrooms wherever found for their
vlnter's nap, and when they do not
Ind a bedroom at hand they are fully
ble to dig a burrow of their own. The
ittle alien from Japan, however, des-
lite severest winter's cold, is up and
.bout with no drowsiness and has
uch small, short and weak feet, with
eeble claws, that it is not fitted to
ig burrows. It is in general poorly
quipped for self-preservation, has
mall, weak teeth, and needs a home

The letters of Miss Merkley,

things said about this medicine were true, and day by day I felt less

fliss Claussen Saved from a Surgical Operation. I
"Dear Mrs. Pinkiiam: — It seems to me that
nil the endorsements that I have read of the value
of Lydia E. Pinkhani's Compound do not express
one-half of the virtue the great medicine really
possesses. I know that it saved my life and I
want to give the credit where it belongs. I bui-
fered with ovarian trouble for five years, had three
operations and spent hundreds of dollars on doc-
tors and medicines but this did not cure ma
after all. , ,
"However, what doctors and medicines failed
to do, Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com-
pound did. Twenty bottles restored me to per-
feet health and I feel sure that had I known of its
value before, and let the doctors alone, I would
have been spared all the pain and expense that
fruitless operations cost me. If the women who are suffering, and
the doctors do not help them, will try Lydia E. 1 inkham s Vege-
table Compound, they will not be disappointed with the results. —
