LAST DAY HAS COME.
Will Brigands Carry Out Their
Threats Against Miss Stone?
Washington, Oct 7 —It is not prob-
able that the kidnappers of Miss Stone
will enforce their ultimatum tomorrow
although that was the date named as
'he last day of grace in her case. The
danger is by no means averted, how-
ever, and the most that can be said
now is that there i a likliliood of se-
curing a short extension by the bri-
gands of the time allowed for the pay-
ment of the ransont. The state de-
partment is bus) ing itself earnestly in
this direction evidently acting under
the belief that in the course of two or
three days, Hie charitable people of
the United States will make up the
fund necessary to secure ,Miss Stone
release. Mr. Adee, the acting secre-
tary of state, was again at the White
House today in consultation with the
president touching Miss Stone's case
and it is believed that negotiations are
in progress indirectly with hercaptors
Meanwhile the White House and
state department are being flowed
letters and telegrams imploring
officials to save Miss Stone.
London, Oct. 7—"It is reported
from Sofia," says a dispatch from Vien-
na to the Daily Express, "that United
Hates Counsel Dickenson and au en-
*oy of the missionary society arrived
•here Saturday intending to follow up
Miss Stone (the abducted missionary)
nd to deposit a portion of the ransom
brigands have extended the time
'or payment one month.

Shaffer Resigns.
< • D MialTer, secretary of the carni-
al committee, was today unexpected-
ly called to Colorado on business and
has resigned his position as secretary
"us comes rather suddenly on Hnd
"e r,*«r,'t thi- thing more than we can
express. Mr. Shaffer has put an energy
into work that not one „ an i„ „
thousand can imitate. He has made
the Cotton Carnival an all-absorbing I
""..a with him and has kept pounding
away on it with a determination of
purpose that has given him unbounded
credit. We feel that the success of
the carnival is alrerdy assured mainly
through his conscientious efforts
'Die committee has appointed the
best man 111 Stillwater to take Mr.
Shaffer's place and supply the vacancy.
If anyone in our midst can follow out
the purpose and precedent established
by Secretary Shaffer, Ed Munhall is
the man.
■Mr. Munhall is handicapped by being
compelled to take up the work just al
this time, so we earnestly ask every
business man to lend him all assistance
available. The carnival will be a suc-
cess. We feel it
