CITIZENSHIP.
Patriotism manifests itself in many and differen
ways. Some people are willing to die for th-ir ooun*
try and a few are willing to live for their country —
which is much harder. Some are eager to . how their
patriotism by holding a job at a fat salary, and some
are willing to vote the party licket straight—just be
cause it is tbe parly ticket. Patriotism is olten an-
other name tor pride. The small ways in which pa-
riotisnt may be shown seldom attract attention. h
soldier attacks ti e enemy of his country *nd we oal|
him a patriot. Hut it is patriotic also to cut down the
w-eds in your back yard. Tbe soldier gives his life in
a day, but the scientist who gives his life in a genera-
tion is also palriotio. Two kinds of citizens are in
every town, patriots and traitors. There is no middle
ground of neutrality. Everyman is in one camp or the
other. The patriot does his full duty to theconununity
—votes, expresses Lis opinion, takes part in meetings
.or civio good, bears cheerfully his portion of the com-
munity’s work. The traitor lets the other fellow do
the work and reaps the benefit by the othir fellow’s
patriotism. Treason consists of levying war against
the republic or giving aid -nd comfort to her enemies.
He gives aid ami comloil to the public enemies who
does not assist in making better the community in
which he lives. He is himself a public enemy.
