AND OKLAHOMA CALL.
PUBLISHED BKMI-WKKKI.Y .
HURT L. BIXLZR.
MINNIE M. BIXLER,
EDITOR.
Business Manager
" Hatter Intended for publication In Satur-
day's paper should reach this office not later
than Friday noon, and for Wednesday's paper
not later than Tuesday noon, to Insure publ-
ication.
Have you investigated the mer-
its of the Building and Loan Asso-
ciation? If you have not you
should do so at onoe.
About the beginning of the new
year the numerous candidates for
the different county offices will be-
gin to show themselves.
We publish the Presidents mes-
sage in full. It will at least be in-
leresting to our readers even if it
does not meet with their approval.
The statehood convention at
Shawnee adopted resolutions favor-
ing any kind of statehood but we
are satisfied that the action of the
convention will not have the ap-
proval of the people of Oklahoma.
For several reasons which we have
not time to mention, the action of
the convention will have but little
weight with congress or the presi
dent.
We want all those who cniHein
plate proving up to rrmeinbt r tluii
it was I lie Statu I'Kmci hat ilmi
inaugurated ihe !"' pruv d linal
proof notice* and by so doing .-aved
the homesteaders several thousand
dollars' The State I)kmo< hat has
always taken the interests of the
people into consideration and we
want all of our friends to tell their
neighbors, who do not read this pa-
per. to call and see us before they
prove up.
We understand that our esteem-
ed friend, John Skin'ein Allan, has
been searching the county records
for the past four years to find some
of our bills for which we have
charged the county more than the
law allowed, and that he hopes to
find some error on which to base
an attack in order to divert the at-
tention of the people from his pad-
ded columns and double priced le-
gal printing. Admitting for tin-
sake of argument that we over-
charged the county, it could only
have been through error, as we will
cheerfully refund every cent where
the columns were padded or where
we charged double price. No. John,
counter-charges will not make your
work honest, or alter the fact that
you are what we term a mosquito-
bar reformer. You have posed as a
Goo Goo before the peopla and
have continually denounced the
old parties for being frauds, and at
the first opportunity you padded
your columns and charged double
price. You are a nice reformer!
You are one of those holier than
thou fellows, of the character which
cries 'stop thief to attract attention
from your own acts; but all you
can say or do does not alter the fact
that you robbed the county when
you padded your columns.
SKI.I'-SACItl I'ICINO KIMTO:.
A Western paper lias given sever
al examples of the unselfishness ol
editors:
"As a rule, editors are kind-
hearted and liberal. An Oklahoma
editor tells of a subscriber who died
and left fourteen years subscription
unpaid. The editor appeared just
as the undertaker was screwing
down the coffin lid and put in a
linen duster, a thermometer, a
palm-leaf fan, and a recipe for
making ice. Comment is unneces-
sary."
Another example is thus record-
ed;
"It is a fact, according to the fol-
lowing, that an editor is ever ready
to die or make any sacritice in or-
der to get news for his readers.
During these quiet times an Iowa
editor got desperate because lie
could find no news. He sat down
and wrote a graphic account of a
man being killed by a train, lb
hung the copy on the book, m n
and laid on the track and l< t i.ic
train run over him. And wt -un-
people don't appreeiat" an lii.,r'-
efforts to furnish the news by pav-
ing for his paper."
Enid, Ok., Dec. 5.—After dis-
charging Anna Hoover and Jenny
Hinkle from close confinement in
the county jail, Judge McAtee ap-
pointed W. S. W'hittinghill, W. II.
Anderson, John C. Moore, .1. 0.
Roberts and Geo. 1). Orner to draft
suitable memorial addressed to
the governor, calling attention !
to the deplorable circumstance*
surrounding these young girls and i
ask bis excellency to provide a
place for the following resolutions
which have been signed by a large
majority of ttie bar;
To the Governor:- A'e, the mem-
bers of the bar of Garfield county,
Oklahoma, respectfully represent
that Anna Hoover, Jennie Hinkle
and David Hinkle, children under
the age of sixteen years were at the
spring term, 1895, of the district
court of Garfield county ajudged
incorrigible and were by the order
of the court confined in the county
jail under the statutes of the terri-
tory to await until a reformatory
should be provided by you, as au-
thorized to do under the laws of
the territory.
Owing to the fact that you made
no provision lor tin children the
sentence of the court lias ivrently
been suspended and they have been
given limits of the county.
In our opinion thtbo children are
fit subjects lor edu' ulion in a re-
form school, and we arc not irvare
of any provision ol the law which
authorizes the« xpenditure of money
by the counties for this purpose.
These children, like all incorrigi-
ble youths, are a menace to society
in this county, but if confined in
the common jail they are brought
in contact with all classes of crimi-
nals of every age, sex and color
and all degrees of degradation,
where reform is not only impossi-
ble but which contact can only re-
sult in making criminals of those
who might otherwise be redeemed.
We therefore heartily approve
the action of the Hon. John L. .Mc-
Atee in setting at liberty these un-
fortunate children and at the same
time we call your attention to the
menace to society in permitting
them to be at large.
In order therefore to carry out
the beneficent objects in the act of
the legislature which makes pro-
visions for the care and custody of
incorrigible youth, etc., we most re-
spectfully urge that you take steps
to provide a reform school where
these unfortunate persons may be
sent.
The above resolutions were sign-
ed by the whole bar of Enid.
We keep marriage certificates for
wale at the STATE DEMOCRAT office.
