We are not surprised to find true

to rich and poor, high and low.
The American system of public
schools is strictly an AmericanV i-

primary principles of our Ameri-
can government "a ijovernii ent of
the people, for the people, and by
the people." While our schools are
uo more the product of American
senilis than many of our original
institutions, yet they surely should
be the most highly prized of all
other institution- by tbe true A
mericans.
In preparing the rising j_-ner. -
. ion for the duties and responsibil-
ities of citizenship, the tendency of
our common schools should be to
make them a cosn opolitau people
as well as patriotic people. They
-hould be taught to ^-iiard against
aristocracies and other -ocial dis-
tinctions that are founded on lh<-
mere accidents of birth and wealth.
