Member.-* oi'the Mutual Reserve
Fund Lite Association have receiv-
ed a circular announcing that their
assessments have been increased,
fite holder of a $T>.000 policy, who
has paid irl0.4.~> every two months,
is now called upon to pay $11.85;
other assessments are in propor-
tion. The circular making this an-
nouncement is dated June 12, and
signed by tlie President Harper.
It contains this statement:
The report of the Insurance Su-
perintendent oi the State oI New
York of the recent examination
made by Iiiiuol the Mutual Reserve
Fund Life Association, while pos-
tively certifying "that all proper
death-claims arc paid in full," oiti-
cially calls the attention of the
management to a want of equity in
that the members admitted in the
earlier years are not paying their
equitable cost in proportion to the
benefits received, lie advises that
this inequity be remedied "at the
earliest opportunity'' by a re-ap-
portionment ol the rates of assess-
ments. i he carrying out of this
recommendation, with a death-rate
such as has prevailed during the
last three \ ears, and still prevails,
requires that there be collected,
available for mortality purposes,
a somewhat increased revenue, and
this increase lias been apportioned
accordance with the demands
oi equity as defined by the Super-
intendent of Insurance.
A holder of one of the earlier pol-
icies of the association said to-day:
"The Mutual Reserve Fund Asso-
ciation seems lt> be taking the same
course which has marked the his-
tory oi smaller assessment organi-
zations. When 1 was insured, the
agent assured lite that each assess-
ment would be $0.80, and that these
assessments would not occur more
•than four tinies a year. They have
now been increased to $11.85 every
two months. It is very poor com-
fort to us polies -holders to be told
that the cost to the members has
been lower by far than that of any
other institutions that ever attain-
ed such r< ults. 1 am paying; more
every year for my $.">.00(1 policy in
this Association than I do for a
similar amount of insurance in a
level-premium company, I lie only

woul< sive up to its promise and
given-* a paid-up policy after fif-
teen \ u s through the operation of
the rrrerve fund. The persistent

ment nolda out rather a small ex-
pectation of the realization of this
