miUNUU si (,<ii;srioNs.
There are a few so called editorial
writers, happily only a few, however,
whose standard of the profession
seems to be based on their nuid sling-
ing capacities. To handy epithets is
considered to he the ne plus ultra of
mental acumen, in a ease that re-
cently came under notice a writer of
tills sort, made use of the word "stu-
pid," two or three times, "idiotic"
lour times to say nothing of such
choice expressions as "mad hull"
enraged tuurus would have been more
collegiate—"jibbers" and other class-
ical allusions all w ithin theeompa:
of thirty-six lines, to say nothing
again of his inuendoes, in prickly En-
glish about his opponents "damn"
bad grainuier. Of course it is com-
paratively easy for an adolescent
scribbler to make use of such expres-
sions, Uiut they prove absolutely no-
thing. However pleasing they may i
be to the vanity of the writer, they
never convince any one of the cor-|
rectness of hi* claim to be called
"brainy."
The prime canse for such editorial
disquisitions seems to be envy. II is
a disease peculi.ii- to his sophomorie
period of newspaper experience. The
victim is apt to grow restive toward
a eotemporary more favored and in-
dulge ia mouthings as a sort of safety
Milve to prevent, an outright explo-
sion. Our advice to such, whether
here or elsewhere is, to keep cool; . il-elt ijKl^li.irK/S „k{^. •
