DROWNED.
Leavenworth, Kan., March 10.—
Yesterday afternoon an unknown man
and a boy were going down the river in
a skiff, when it suddenly capsized op-
posite the Riverside coal mine, south
of this city. Both were thrown into
the water and made heroic efforts to
save their lives. The man could swim
some, and he managed to keep on top
of the water until rescued. The boy
sank and is now lying at the bottom of
the river. When the man was taken
ashore he became unconscious and
nothing can be learned of him or the
dro.vned boy.
Ml"unKD THE STEER TO DEATH.
Lmiason, Ind., March 10.— A most
shocking case of cruelty to animals
came to light here yesterday. Anthonv
Peck, a wealthy farmer, became en-
raged at a steer for tearing downn
fence, and. driving it into a pen. he
poured coal oil all over it and set it on
lire, burning the animal to death. The
grand jury is investigating the affair.
