THE BVKNIS OFTHQ PAST YEAR.
During the year of 1905 some
of the greatest events of all time
have transpired. Among the
most momentous we will ment-
ion the first, the most stupendous
struggle ever waged by men in
the Russo-Japan War; the fall of
Port Arthur the strongest port
ever taken; the great Naval bat-
tle in the Straits of Corea, with
the annihilation of the Russian
fleet; the peace treaty of Ports-
mouth whereby Japan gains the
control of Corea and a vast part
of Manchuria, and holds the key
to China and becomes fifth naval
power of the world and the
dominant power of the Pacific
and Asiatic world. So tremend-
ous has been the struggle that
thrones and parliaments, cong-
resses and sublime powers are in
holy fear of such gigantic strug-
gles so productive of political
and financial cataclysm.
And the Panama canal the
unsolved problem which has pre-
plexed the nation and from which
our brainiest men have added
nothing to their, executive or
constructive ability to combat
with a enestion of such huge
magnitude.
Among other events of the
year might be mentioned the
discovery of two new Sattellites
of Jupiter and a tenth Sattellite
of Saturn, and the wonderful
sensitiveness of ehronophoto-
graphio scenes in registering the
outlines ot Mars' canals.
Vast strides have been mad«
in civil engineering, to complex
and intricate to explain. In this
electric age great achievements
have been made. Reservoirs
holding billions of gallons have
been constructed the past year,
eastern#' City supply and ir
regation of the arid west.
Trains have been scheduled
from New York to Chicago in
eighteen hours 9.60, miles aver-
aging 53 1-3 miles per hour,
much of the distance further.
And the introduction of steel
coaches, while vast strides are
being made in every field of
thought and human endeavor
Refers, and for thirty years Sal-
lust had been sleeping in the
dreamless draperies of eternal
peace before the coming of the
young Nazerene carpenter, and
before the Son of Man was nine-
teen years old the great Livy
closed his eyes in death.
Most all of the gifted sons of
phylosophy and song, the result
and offsprings of the goldenage
of literature as Cattullus and oth-
ers death had kissod their eye-
lids down for ever.
Strange as it may seem, every
poet, artist, orator and states-
man of the Cr. ek and Roman
world had passed the portals of
death before the song of good-
will among men on earth was
sang to the Shepherds on the
plains.

HOME GREAT SOUTHKKNEm
Washingtn, the father of this
country, was southern. JefTer
son> who wrote the declaration of
independence, was southern.
Madison, the father of the con
stitution was southern, Munroe
who declared the great doctrine
to which ,was given his name,
was southern. Marshall, the
greatest jurrist thisjeountry tver
produced, was southern. Henry
Clay, the great commoner, was
southern. Winfield Scott, the
conquerer of Mexico, was south-
ern. Lee the great and the good,
and Jackson without fear and
without reproach, were south-
ern. Joe Wheeler, who served
his country at Santaigo, is south-
ern. Hobson, who did a brave
but futile act, is southern, win-
field Scott Schley, who wiped
the Spanish fleet from the face
of the earth, is southern. The
.Rough' Riders, who were re-
cruited at San Antonio, Texas, a
southern state, were largely
southern. Mr. Lincoln was at
least of southern birth, and Mr.
Roosevelt publicly glories in the
fact that he has southern blood
in his veins on his mother's side.
Seeing what he is, and what he
has done for this nation in creat-
ing and shaping its ends, why
should not the southern man be
proud of nis country?
