was m the city, compiling a new map
of the city and revising the map drawn
by them in 1898. Many new buildings
and a vast amount of changes made it
necessary for this.'revisin which will be
furnished the insurance companies Jby
this map company.
^ esterday the 'phone at the court
house was quite suddenly taken out
when the commissioners said the coun-
ty would not pay for it and the other
officers did not feel it was their place
to do so. A 'phone in the court house
is a business necessity with the lawyers
of the city and a great deal of business
every day that could be transacted by
phone will now cause some one a trip
to and from the court house.

Call For Bids.
It is very unpleasant to go through
life under an assumed name, yet when
a lady gets married she assumes a new
name.
In connection with the work under
supervision of ('. C Cooke in yester-
day's issue we failed to mention his
two largest buildings. The college
barn, feet, at a cost of $5,500 will
be erected according to his plans and
specifications and also the Jefferson
school buildingat acost of $5,500. This
school building will be up to one story
high by tomorrow evening.
With the rattle and heavy jar of
large and new vehicles the city sounds
more citified. The sound of the fire
wagon, yet seldom heard, and of the
heavy ice wagon and furniture de ivcry
wagons, it is increased and to add to
the jar of the buss the Payne hotel
will order n new one and then the ary
at the depot at train time will be in-
tense.

fairfield, la., are in the city looking

ing near Marana renewed his subscrip-
tion today and had bii paper abanged

Word reached this city this morning
that Miss Adelia Shorhe hail died in
Guthrie last night at 11 o,clock. Miss
Shorbe lias been in Guthrie several
weeks receiving treatment and was
thought to be getting better until no-
tice of her death was received. A tele-
gram was sent them the day before
but failed to reach the family until
this morning when a sister of the de-
ceased immediately took the train not
knowing of herdeath, but later a phone
message was received announcing that
she had suddenly died last night. Fun-
eral services will be held at the M. E.
church in thli city tomorrow morning
at 10 oclock. The body arrived on the
train thli afternoon.
lhe Hoard of Education of the Still-
water schools will on the 22d of June
receive bids for 60 tons of McAlester,
Alderson fancy lump coal, same to be
weighed on county scales. Bids to be
filed on or before the above date with
J. K. Weeb or G. 11. McClain. Coal to
be delivered on or before September 1,
1001. Right reserved to reject any or
all bids. Payment will be made in
school district warrants.

institute today: Misses Austin, Gray,
Donart, Darnell and lleran.
Mr. Kelso, the hustling encyclope-
dia ngent, has charge of the Physics
class.
Tomorrow we must have quotations
again under Prof. Hendrix. The Prof,
believes that it is beneficial, and we
heartily approve this idea. We should
be practiced in our common schools.
Professors Hickman and Hendrix
were enjoying those delightful stories
of the civil war told by Mr. Downs,
the janitor this morning during meth-
ods class.
We are sorry Evart Phenis was com-
pelled to leave institute. His health
would not permit him to stay longer.
We hope he will soon convalesce.

I nited States Authorities Called
Yesterday Afternoon to Pro-
tect Negroes.
' The United States Attorney's office
at Guthrie was notified yesterday
morning by the Santa Fe authorities
at Glencoe of an attempt to run the
colored railroad men out of the city,
1 nnu yesterday evening Deputy U. S.'
Marshal Sission and others passed
through this city to protect these
colored men.
The United States authorities have
jurisdiction in such matters, as a rail-
road is a national highway and also
in order to protect the constitutional
right of any citizen. The United States
marshal's and attorney's ollice respond-
ed at once by sending represennativea
to the scene.
A Pleasant Time,
There was an ice cream social at the
I lerce hotel on last Wednesday even-
ing. A number of teachers were In-
vited and every one enjoyed them-
selves immensely.
We feel greatful to Mrs. Pierce for
taking such a deep interest in our
teachers and entertaining them in such
an appreciative manner.
