Populism is Americanism up to date 1
and is not groping around in the
cemeteries of the past trying to
draw sustenance for present growth
and existence. The absolute need
of a new party in American politics,
filled with the spirit of American-

American people every time they
intrust either of the old parties with
power. Just think of populism dy-

In the "Memoir" of Lord Dramwell
is a tdlintt illustration of the fact that
reputation clings to us, even after many
years. The great jnrist as a little lad
became a pupil at Dr. Reddy 's school,
where the late Baron Channell, three
years his senior, was bead hoy.
Channell read for tho law, and the
two school friends scarcely met again
nntil, years afterward, Mr. Channell
held a brief in a certain case at Maid-
stone assizes.
Consultation with the solicitors
showed a flaw in tbo pleadings drawn
by them. It was of a eoit which in
bind the woodshed rigging up kick- those days would prove fatal to the

ing machines to kick themselves for
voting for the present Republican
legislative assembly ! Banish the
thought of populism d)ing when
there is so much evidence at hand
of need for its growth.
A great part of the time of the
time of the present legislature has
been taken up by an alleged invest-
igation of the territorial officials,—
and will some wise individual tell us
of what benefit this investigation
will be to the territory? This paper
said at the time the investigation
was decided on that it would be
time and money wasted, and that
the legislature cotild more profitably
spend its time passing laws to pre-
vent future abuses than delving into
the past. The investigation
turned out to be a complete fiasco
case. Tho solicitors could only hope
that it would not he discovered.

years ago a citizen of Liberty, Mo., was

caused the month to close, and the

Johnnie I>ever.
.Johnie, the little son of Mr. and
Mrs. W. A. Dever, came into this
world, July 5th 13H8, and was called
from earth to heaven, March 4th 1800
Thui.hU stay was of only eight months
duration, yet he tasted some of the
bitters of life—during his short sick-
ness, bis suffering was intense, but he
bore it with marked patience. Hut
now his sufferings are over and he is
with the redeemed. His little light
has been taken from earth to shine
more brightly in heaven. A (lower
has been plucked from the shore of
time to blossom in its fullness on the
bright and happy shore of eternity—
in the haven of rest. His earthly coo
of satisfaction has been changed to
exultant heavenly joy: liis cry of pain
has been changed for that of a song
of praise around the throne of God.
Me thinks with spiritual hands, he
beckons father, mother, sisters,
brothers and other loved ones, "this
way, this way."
To the bereaved ones we extend
sympathy and words of comfort: Our
loving Father doeth all things for
the best. It is far better to be absent
in body and present in Spirit with the
Lord—Paul said: "For me to live in
Christ, to die is gain." A Fkiend.

Frederick the Great inado generous
presents to all musicians except Ante
players. He played the flute remark-
ably well himself. A famous tlntist
once asked permission to play to tho
king, hoping that Frederick would
show his appreciation of his skill by
some valuable gift. Frederick listened
attentively while he played a difficult
piece. "Yon play very well," he said,
"and I will give you a proof of my sat-
isfaction."
Ho saying, he left tho room The mu-
sician waited, guessing at tho probable
nature of the "proof. " Presently the
king returned with his own flute and
played the same piece. Then he bado
his visitor "Good dny," saying, "I
have had the pleasure of hearing you,
and it was only fair that you should
hear me."

What does a lion weigh? Those who
know the look of the king of beasts best
and how small his little body really is
will probably come farthest from the
truth. About 800 to 850 pounds is a
usual estimate. Rut a full grown lion
will tip the scales at no less than 500
ponnds. Five hundred and forty pounds
is the record for an African lion. His
bone is solid and heavy as ivory.
The tiger runs the lion very close. A
Bengal tiger, killed two years ago by
an English officer, scaled 520 pounds.
A tiger this size has, however, consid-
erable more muscuhr strength than the
biggest lion.

This word is used throughout the
Australian colonies in connection with
a coroner's inquiry. It does not figure
in any dictionary that I aui aware of |
not even in Professor Morris' "Austral-
English." It Beems distinctly jour-
nalese. How does the "i" come in, for
one could understand the expression
"a coronal inquiry?" Is it a variant of
"corony + al?" Perhaps somewhat akin
to th.! formation of "baronial" from
"barony + al.Notes and Queries.

The Oi-itflii of Tills Fiivorlte Sport of
Childhood und Youth.
This favorite sport of childhood and
youth is of French origin and very high
antiquity, having been introduced into
England in the train of the Norman
conquerors. Its French name, "Colin
Maillard, " was that of a brave warrior,
tho memory of whose exploits still lives
in the chronicles of tho middle ages.
In the year 999 Liege reckoned among
its valiant chiefs ouo Jean Colin, ilo
acquired the name Maillard from his

his esquire to take him into the thickest o
