Sav Francisco, April 25.—Chief of
Police Crowley confessed last night ftt
the close of the second day of the pre-
liminary examination of YV. II. T. Dur-
rant, the youiitf medical student and
assistant superinten lent of the Eman-
uel Haptist church, that the evidence
so far presented to connect Purrant
with the murder in the church of Miss
Minnie Williams, April 12. wasdreided-
disappointinj^. It is beginning* to be the
general fear, in view of the weakening
of witnesses for the state under the fire
of cross-examination, which could
not be expected to bo as strong
now as on regular trial, that
the church murders may yet go
down into history as unsolve I
mystcriesof the San Francisco criminal
annals. Certain it is that the police
have been totally unable to add to
their circumstancial evidence in the
past threo days. Thev have some twen-
ty-five witnesses yet to be examined,
but the public is beginning to believe
that these also may not be able to go
through the cross-examinations un-
scathed.
Certain it is that Durraut has not
lost his assurance or nerve. His de-
meanor is such that the conclusion
forces itsfllf upon the observers that ho
is either a most consummate monster
or a most cruelly wronged man.
Searchers have found blood stains in
the church, showing that the murderer
made his way in the dark from the
library closet, where lay the mutilated
body of Miss Williams, to the wash
room back of tho pulpit in the rear of
the church. The prints of bloody lin-
gers were seen at intervals. The ex-
tent of the blood stains in the wash
room goes to prove that tho murderer
had no light while washing his hands,
for a judicious person would not have
spattered so much blood around if he
could have seen what ho was doing.
And it is evident if he had had a light
he would not have left the bloody
stains on tho wall. This tends to prove
that trhc murderer was familiar with
every part of tho church building.
Durraut is making strenuous efforts
to prove an alibi in the l/imont case
by attempting to show that on the day
Miss Lamont disappeared he was not
!her escort from school at .'1:30 o'clock
in tho afternoon. Three young women
have identified him as the young man
they saw on a car with Miss Lamont
at that hour. Durraut will call on his
college classmates to prove that he
was at a lecture at that hour. It is
said that his note book contains no
notes of the loot lire an I that he ob-
tained information of the subject mat-
ter of the lecture from another student.
This matter is a question of impor-
tance to Durrant. an I he Ivi e< his
hopes on tho memory of his fellow-
students. He was marked present at
this lecture, but, as it had been a habit |
of students t.o answer for each other,
the roll book does not count.

Washingroir, April lI Prof. 11. W.
Wiley, the chemist of the agricultural
department, is conducting a serin t>f
experiments to determine the fertility
of the typical soils of the I'nitcd States.
Tho object is to determine the fertl
Jiser necessary to restore the fertility
of any soil, and to save the farmer
tho thousands annually spent for
fertilizers which do not meet
the necessities of the soil to
which they are applied. Tho
work was specially authorized by the
last session of congress. By the help
of tho agricultural stations in various
parts of the country the typicil soils
of the various sections are bein^ col-
lected by persons competent to judge
them. The pots of soil experimented
upon will be photographed at Mated
intervals so that evidence of tho pro-
ductive qualities of different classes of
fertilizers may be shown.

I Tho Report of the Weather Service Sum.
marl/.ed llrlelly.
| Topkka, Kan., April 25.—The week-
ly weather-crop bulletin of tho Kan-
sas weather service for the week ended
the :22d says: The temperature fell be-
low the normal durin g tho first days of
the week and 1 iff lit frosts formed over
the state, but the warm days follow-
ing have carried the temperature above
the normal and at the close of the
week there was an accumulated excess
of about 20 decrees. The rainfall,
however, remains deficient, except i\«
j Grant, Trc#o, Ness, I'Jilc and thenorth-
I eastern counties, though fairly ffood
J rains have fallen in the northern coun-
I ties.
In the eastern division farming op-
erations are ueinff vigorously pushed.
Corn planting is well along in the cen-
tral counties an 1 lias bo-.fun In the
northern. Corn is coining up as far
north as the Ivaw rlvar, while in the
extreme south farnii rs h ive be^nn cul-
tivating it. The greatest advance,
however, is in the fruit tree * and grass;
the orchards are full of bloom and the
prairies are carpeted with green.
Wheat and oats arc looking fine,
though rain is much needed generally.
In the middle division the orchards
aro giving fine promise now; much
corn is going in; wheat still improving
some; oats doing well, and gardens
nicely. The sand and dirt storm the
first of tho week was probably un-
precedented. It did some damage by
blowing away loose dirt. A good rain
is greatly needed.
In the western division tho severe
wind the first of the week filled the air
with the dry sand an 1 caused consider-
able damage to growing crops and
fruit blossoms. Wheat does not yet
give tr.ucli promise and some fields are
being put into other grains. Oats,
barley and grass are tnaVing good
headway, and much stock feed is being
put in in the shape of IvaiTir and Jeru-
salem corn. Fruit here, as else where,,
irives abundant, nromiso.
